Odds are that MAYBE one of the nominated Features will get an Oscar nom. MAYBE. Promote this thread! | | oldschoolhero

I think this year's awards are going to be pretty indy-heavy, with the big-budget hopefuls-Alexander, Phantom Of The Opera, etc-underperforming critically. | OlFuzzyBastard

Braff winning the screenplay gong would create a really good Affleck/Damon Good Will Hunting throwback moment, and if Portman gets shut out in Best Actress for Closer then she should be nominated in Best Supporting for this. | Freeway

The main flaw this year is that with such a weak year, theoretically Jamie Foxx, Natalie Portman & Jim Carrey could ALL get two Oscar nominations. Damn unlikely, but possible. | Big Bad

| #6 Posted on 2.12.04 2211.06 Reposted on: 2.12.11 2216.23 | I'm not sure why everyone is picking Sideways to be such a heavy Oscar favourite. I have no doubt it'll be a terrific movie, but Alex Payne's films have been too quirky to get any Best Picture nods. I can see Church and the screenplay being nominated, but that's about it.
At this point, I think only these picks are the locks...
Best Picture: Kinsey, Aviator, Closer Possibles: The Life Aquatic, Finding Neverland, Vera Drake, Ray, Million Dollar Baby
Best Director: Scorsese, Condon, Nichols Possibles: James L. Brooks, Alex Payne, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Michael Moore, Mike Leigh, Marc Forster
Best Actor: Jamie Foxx, Liam Neeson, Johnny Depp Possibles: Leo DiCaprio, Javier Bardem, Don Cheadle, Jim Carrey If I had a vote.....Carrey, but for Eternal Sunshine
Best Actress: Julia Roberts, Annette Bening, Kate Winslet Possibles: Emmy Rossum, Imelda Staunton, Hilary Swank If I had a vote.....Natalie Portman in Garden State
Best Supporting Actor: Clive Owen, Thomas Church, Peter Saarsgaard Possibles: John Lithgow, Alec Baldwin, Owen Wilson If I had a vote.....David Carradine
Best Supporting Actress: Laura Linney, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman Possibles: Meryl Streep, Virginia Madsen If I had a vote....Irma P. Hall | oldschoolhero

I disagree. I think the controversy will keep it from winning, but a nomination is pretty much assured. Linney will is the heavy favourite for supporting actress and Condon might have a shot at winning a screenplay award.
Then again, this is one of the most wide-open years in Oscar history, so who knows what movie will still have legs come late February. Coming after last year's cakewalk for Return of the King, it's kind of fun to be back in a horserace. | Deputy Marshall

Anyways, back to the Independent Spirit Awards. All in all I felt this year was kind of weak for independent films, but it was good to see Napoleon Dynamite get some love. | oldschoolhero

| #10 Posted on 3.12.04 1445.24 Reposted on: 3.12.11 1446.25 | Passion is the film likely to get that "controversial" spot over Kinsey. It's religious rather than salacious (I know Kinsey ain't either, but hey, that it's being labelled) and Gibson's running it on a holier-than-thou "no advertising" ticket, which means if it gets nommed it'll be totally down to the Academy. THAT'S the kinda press-baiting picture they like. Plus, like Finding Neverland, Kinsey is a biopic, and it's unlikely two of 'em will make the slate. They'r ethe place for the actors to shine, after all. Neverland has the Miramax machine behind it, Kinsey has nothing but negativity. It'll score a nod for Neeson, Linney, Condon's screenplay and maaaaybe Tim Curry or Peter Sarsgaard, but outside of that it's a total outsider. | Freeway
