Does anyone know of any website that gives good deals on new credit card customers? Something non-profit, not a site full of ads. I'm looking at getting a card for the first time and I want to compare and contrast and get a good rate.

I know this is probably a sensitive topic spam-wise, but I truly just want to find a good site that will offer some good deals. Like Cnet in the review-sense and SlickDeals in the deal-sense.

My advice is to get a checking account with a bank and get one of their credit cards. You might have only a $500 limit, but after a year of making on-time payments, you might get offers for low APR cards and the like.

You need to establish your credit first.

My best advice if you are looking into a credit card for the first time is to pay it in full every month. Then the rate doesn't matter, you build up your credit rating, and don't add to your personal debt. Credit card debt is a very easy thing to fall into, and very difficult to get out of.

Basically, one shouldn't spend what one doesn't have.

I've been really pleased with Capitol One since I transferred my other balances to them.

Type in a credit card company's name in a search engine, and you'll probably find a "I hate (insert company here)" website. I'd go with one that's well known to you and your family and friends. It's all about building credit, so don't be bummed if you get a low limit and bad rates at first.

Here's a little tip. Use your full name, and a middle one if you have it. There just happens to be another person out there with the same exact name as me, so I now use my middle name or (at the very least) middle initial. This person has a myriad of credit problems, and I've been getting calls about him since I was 17 years old. My local police department just recently called me to make sure that I wasn't the Roy who was bouncing checks out west.

Oh, and the collection agency that Providian Credit Card company uses are total assholes. They called me every day for a week (different person each day), and two of the guys called me a deadbeat and threatened to take my car, home, etc. until I explained the situation to them and made them realize that my SS# and the other Roy's SS# didn't match up. Then they got polite with me (worried about something?) and I calmly told them to kiss my ass. I'll never hold a Providian Credit Card because of this.

A note for any of you who have Youngins:

When your kids become Teens, get them a shared credit account with you. Don't let them use their card except for emergencies, but you should use it and make sure the payments are never late. My parents did this for me, and it ended up getting me some credit offers with decent rates by age 18. Combine that with a cosigned car loan that was always paid on time, and my credit was good enough to qualify me for my own car loan at 21.

I really hate using Credit Cards, but it's nice to have a good credit record to fall back on when I need it.

The moral of the story: It's never too early to start building good credit.

Exactly. Take it from one of the oldest posters here. Don't spend what you don't have. You should pay your credit card bill IN FULL every month. Back in my much younger days, I did not do that. It was not pretty for a couple years. You youngsters need to listen to your elders once in a while. Now, get off my damn lawn, you little punks!

I've been living off of cash, checks and debit cards until now and after getting out of school I'm going to need something for emergency "poor" times (they seem to be coming up more frequently with student loans and such).

Thank you for all your suggestions. It's appreciated.

He doesn't have to take it from the old man either.

The young guy here will COMPLETELY vouch for it.

When I started working full time about 3 years ago, I got one. Around last year, I found myself in $3800 worth of debt. Time and pay raises haven't made things much better, and while it's slowly disappearing, the key word is SLOWLY and I'd much rather be putting the money I'm using to pay that off towards something like a car or house.

Be VERY careful with those stupid things. Once I'm paid off, I drop my maximum to $1000 and never look back.
