| #1 Posted on 23.11.04 1404.33 Reposted on: 23.11.11 1405.25 | Good riddanceOriginally posted by AP/CNN.com Dan Rather, embattled anchor of the "CBS Evening News," announced Tuesday that he will step down in March, on the 24th anniversary of taking over the job from Walter Cronkite.
The veteran anchor has been under fire in recent months for his role in a "60 Minutes Wednesday" story that questioned President Bush's service in the National Guard, which turned out to be based on allegedly forged documents.
Rather, 73, said he will continue to work for CBS, as a correspondent for both editions of "60 Minutes."
He made no mention of the National Guard story in announcing the change, saying he had agreed with CBS executives last summer that after the November 2 election would be the right time to leave.
"I have always been and remain a `hard news' investigative reporter at heart," he said. "I now look forward to pouring my heart into that kind of reporting full time."
CBS did not mention a potential successor for Rather, who has been at CBS for more than four decades and made his name as a reporter covering the Nixon White House.
Whatever happened to the "investigation"/kangaroo court regarding Rather's fabrications, anyway?
EDIT: Dan Rather scrambles to confirm story of his resignation: HA!

The worst thing about this is that strings were pulled to get Bush into the Guard and Bush was possibly AWOL or at least in derilection of duty, not to mention repeated misinformation coming from the White House on the matter, and Dan Rather goes and tanks the whole freakin' story with a FORGED document when there are plenty of UNFORGED documents to use because he's part of the Liberal Media or a Conservative Operative, depending on which wing of the nuthouse you live in. Either way, he's a shitty journalist and I'm glad he's going the way of the dinosaur. | PalpatineW

Anyone who watched MuchMusic in Canada in the 80s must, like myself, have a hard time taking J.D. seriously without his black leather jacket.

Moot point, since I was focusing on who they're going to get to replace him -- not what they've done in the past. It's over, Bush won, move on. | Guru Zim
