The ECW DVD will likely end up being the largest and fastest selling pro wrestling DVD ever, as evidenced by the intruiging sell outs all over the country. Dave Meltzer and Mike Tenay today on WOL both expressed that WWE would be foolish not to revive it, or at least set an angle in place featuring ECW. Tenay further went to say he would be shocked if WWE didn't bring it back, and perhaps even put them on the much fabled Saturday night slot. I know there have been rumors of ECW coming back for years now, but now would be the perfect time to do it. This could end up being the beginning of the next big thing to bring back at least some compelling interest to the stale product. But what would be the best way to even begin such an angle? How/who would kick it off?

Not to. ECW is dead now, and there are very real reasons why it died in the first place. Plus, any version of ECW that is brought back now won't be ECW, but WWE with more blood and brawling. The second that they debut Todd Grisham as the new "Voice of ECW" they'd be dead.

Dave mentioned that bringing it back as it's own promotion would be a horrible idea. He did mention that bringing it back just as a group to take on the WWE would be a good idea with the timing.

Personally, I doubt it'd do much, and I've lost all faith in WWE doing an invasion angle successfully after the last debacle. However, it couldn't hurt and nothing else is working.

However, I wouldn't hold my breath as far as them actually doing it.

I agree 100%. Doesn't help that a lot of years have passed too, Dreamer, RVD, Dudleys, etc aren't as young as they used to be, and are probably too conformed to the WWE way of working...would be hard to go back to the old school ECW, and anything else wouldn't do the brand ECW justice. WWE just needs to rake in the money from this DVD (which is one of my favorite DVDs), and use it and the WWE 24/7 as ways to pay tribute to ECW.

No wonder Mike Tenay is a proponent of the idea. He's in the fed re-hashing the Piper-Snuka feud, NWO 2000, and the DDP-Raven program.

More likely than anything, Tenay knows it will be horrible executed, and take some of the focus off the horrible execution of EVERYTHING TNA has done since June or further back.

Agreed. The best thing they can do with the ECW brand is to keep putting the old matches out on DVD. I, for one, certainly wouldn't mind them putting out some Best of comps, or even just DVD's of the old PPVs.

A new ECW would be a watered down version a la the WWE's nWo ...

Besides, it wouldn't have Sabu, Taz(z), Shane Douglas, etc.

It could have worked during Invasion and I think thats what scared Vince. The fact that the some of fans would cheer ECW instead of the WWE team. I do believe that is why they committed the unforgivable sin of being them with WCW an organziation that they hated with all of their guts. The pop they got for getting the hell out of Kane and Jericho then coming through the crowd was nuts. I'd like to see an organization like ECW where its fun and new faces get to shine and most of the old talent is willing to put people over. However, Ring of Honor is as close as it gets, because TNA is still stuck in the god awful days of WCW. Vince using ECW again other than a faction on Smackdown would idoitic. Its a proven failure in the heads of creative and there is no need to punish the fans and ECW alumini with it.

I will say that I'd love to see a DVD set that does a year by year greastest matches for ECW, the same goes for the WWE. WWE hasn't put out a collection DVD since Action, so it would be nice to see a best of Smackdown finally and finish up Best of Raw vols 3-4 on DVD.

I doubt Vince panicked at the reaction ECW got, as the Alliance were supposed to be the faces to begin with.

Ugh. I really don't want any rehash, if only because when ECW was great, it was amazing, but when it was bad, it was just awful.

In my eyes, as soon as the TNN shows started, the whole promotion started to go downhill. You could blame it on the talent raids, on the low ratings, on the network, whatever, but I loved ECW when it was a cult federation that was on Sportschannel Philadelphia Tuesdays at 6PM, fighting for a PPV and national recognition. It pushed the envelope, and Paul E. was at his creative peak, you could say. I was a loyal fan until the end, going to South Philly and my local ice rink to watch shows quite a bit, but in my mind it peaked in 1995-1996/97.

Nobody's going to care if they just throw RVD and a few other guys in with a bunch of "disgruntled" WWE'ers. ECW was (for better or for worse) Sandman, Raven, Dreamer, Pitbulls, Stevie and the Meanie, RVD, Sabu, Taz(z), Public Enemy, the Eliminators, the Gangstas, Mikey Whipwreck, Cactus Jack, Terry Funk, Beulah, Shane Douglas, the Dudleys (Buh Buh, D-Von, Dances With, Sign Guy, Big Dick, and everybody else from Dudleyville) and many others I'm forgetting. Due to contracts with other promotions, the grim reaper, retirements, and other stuff, that core group will never return, and, if they did, who is going to believe that Sandman is a legitimate threat to Triple H or Randy Orton?

Let the promotion be dead and release DVDs and specials about it. There's a ton of stories about the promotion that could be told, and things like the Raven/Dreamer feud, Funk/Cactus, Mikey/Sandman, the Rick Rude/Shane Douglas thing, the "before they were stars" moments (Jericho, Lita, Dudleys, Austin, Rey Rey) could be great on their own.

Well, it's a given that any ECW return wouldnt be succesful, but after the bizzare and shockingly near perfect ECW documentary release, there is a grain of hope. And though Scherer says its not likely and Dunn is 100% against it, the possibility still exists. And even if the quick answer to this thread is "they should just let ECW rest in peace", I think it would be a fresh angle. If they absolutley go ahead with it, I think RVD should beat JBL for the belt, and throw it down like Shane did years ago, and proclaim himself the ECW champion.

Vince didn't panic whatsoever. The same night that "ECW" debuted they were alligned with the WCW faction, about an hour after the Kane/Jericho beatdown. The plan was to pair them up from the start, not a kneejerk reaction to the ECW guys being over and the WWF team being overshadowed.

Apperantly the rumor going around that there is going to be a best of ECW action figure line. The line-up consists of RVD, the Dudley Boyz, Tommy and Paul Heyman in April. And in August, there will be a best of WCW with Booker T, Jericho, Rey, Eddy, Kidman and Flair. This is all speculation, but if you are wondering what is next, I guess if this is true, this is what is next for ECW.

I disagree tat ECW was supposed to be faces, I don't believe anywhere in the Invasion gameplan that ECW was to be faces. They were going to be heels going in no matter what. The only time I think they would have been face is if they did give WCW/ECW, the Smackdown spot and then turned ECW. ECW would have been crowd favorites in a large part of the country, they are the underdogs. Its hard not to route for them.

I got confused. WCW were supposed to be the faces originally. WCW turned heel (god, it's weird typing THAT) the same night ECW debuted (as tweeners? They got a MASSIVE pop), then ECW turned heel and the Alliance was formed. All in one show.

It's roughly the equivalent, in WWE eyes, of saying, "well, why not try the nWo again?" They had their one and only shot at it, it was built beautifully well (RVD and Dreamer running through the crowd to the ring was one of my biggest mark-out moments ever) but completely screwed it over, for reasons that can only be described as egotistical. Vince wanted the wrestling world to know his product was the best, and screw the money he could have made from it.

If they do try and do another ECW angle, it will die, yet again.

ECW was fun. The wrestling wasn't always great, and many of the storylines sucked, but the crowds were always into it.

The matches usually ran a lot longer, and the guys were able to sell more. RVD noted this was a big change for him when he came to WWE, where he was used to getting 12-18 minutes to tell a story, he'd only get 8-10.

The ECW guys were generally smaller (certainly shorter) than the WWE or WCW folks. Think about Taz or the last ECW tag champs - Danny Doring and Amish Roadkill. These guys worked their butts off and were hugely over with the crowds. But Tazz looks like a thick dwarf next to even Michael Cole. They just can't be taken seriously as threats to the WWE hosses.

I suspect the ECW DVD releases are designed not just to make Vince a few more dollars, but to survey the interest on how much of the library gets used as filler for the wrestling 24/7 channel.

I don't see them bringing ECW back any more than them resurrecting ancient, characters like Chief Jay and his brother Jules Strongbow. They were fun face injuns in their day, and in this business never say never, but its not likely.

The ONLY way I could see an ECW revival working is to basically apply it to OVW. I mean, would it hurt to have guys you're developing to have some level of exposure before inexplicably showing up on RAW to cause a miscarriage? It would work pretty easily, too. You're not really investing as much money, since you already have the organization in place. It'd also be great to have access outside of the Ohio Valley region to what would be a viable alternative to WWE's main product, then be able to get a genuinely surprised/excited reaction when a guy people have been following in the new ECW shows up on RAW or Smackdown (which is an element that's been sorely missing since WCW and ECW folded).

Unfortunately, it's all a pipe dream. Too many would view it as an attempt to temporarily cash in on nostalgia, and WWE seems pretty happy with Cornette in his role...and Cornette's hatred of ECW is pretty well documented.

OVW has given us Brock Lesnar, Charlie Haas, Shelton Benjamin, Rico, Cena, and Carlito. It has produced some guys who actually know how to work. ECW may have featured guys who could work, but none of them learned their craft there. The last thing anyone should think about doing is making OVW anything like ECW.

Why one would think another ECW invasion would be good, when the last one bombed so horribly, is beyond me.

I agree, Deputy, in one regard. They ought to have a one hour program for OVW that airs nationally. It could replace Afterburn and Bottom Line, two worthless recap shows, as the WWE's syndicated program. That way people could see a type of wrestling that would be decidedly different from the WWE (if Cornette still got to run it), while at the same time making them care about future WWE superstars. And when their ready to be called up, the WWE could make it a big deal. The two shows could have a bidding war or a draft over the new guy to really create intrigue.
But now I'm just fantasy booking this....
