Picked up a DS today. Best Buy had them here for $179 (all prices Canadian), it was a one-day sale as everyone else has them for $199. The system comes with a demo card - the first part of Metroid Prime Hunters.

I also got Super Mario 64 DS ($39.99) and The Urbz ($49.99). The only other launch titles were Spider-Man 2 and Madden NFL 2005. Toys R Us also had Asphalt: Urban GT racing when I was there yesterday.

Mario 64 is kinda neat - they took the original N64 game and added Wario, Luigi, and Yoshi. The control is tricky - either you have to use button presses to make your guy run or crouch, or you can use your thumb on the touch screen to work it like an analog stick. I think I'll get used to this, but today I fell off things a lot and swore a bunch.

The Urbz is a lot like last year's GBA Sims game. I'm liking it a lot, but so far, I haven't seen any advantage to the second screen.

I tried Wario Ware GBA on it, and it worked fine. In fact, it looks a lot better on the DS than the GBA. I am not sure, but I think maybe the DS screens are higher-res. I could look that up and be sure, but I'm too lazy.

The game cards are super tiny - half the width and half the thickness of a GBA cartridge. Not sure how to transport them. They come in large-ish hard cases that the cards snap into - not sure that's ideal for a portable system, but I wouldn't want to carry them around without some kind of protection. They're so wee! I'm sure someone will come along and sell small cases soon enough.

Anyone else pick up one of these today?

Got one and Mario 64. I'm having loads of fun with it, the minigames have been eating up a lot more time than the actual story, but I'm digging that too. I haven't found the controls too bad, but I'm only using the touchscreen in the menu selects during the actual game (the map is a nice help though), but it really shines in the minigames. The big problem with it that I've noticed is that it's made controls in Metroid really jerky. It's great for aiming, but the double tap for a jump is really sensitive, and it ends up being a hassle more than a help.

In the end I kind of wish I had the willpower to wait for a cooler color and Animal Crossing DS, but I got it and I'm happy that I did. Technically it's a mini-powerhouse and I'm willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt when they say that the touch screen will be a good thing.

Ohhhh. That's how you jump. That will make that platformy bit a lot easier, I bet.

I'm going to wait a little on this one. I love my SP - but that's the problem. I love my SP.

I don't use it THAT often, and it rocks. I don't think I need to get one of these right away...

Now I will run away and hide from the seductive DS.

What's that Wario one, "Bob-omb Squad" I think it's called? Yeah, that one is surprisingly addictive ...

Overall, I'd say the controls are a lot more "intuitive" than I expected ... I got the hang of using the thumb pad for analog control fairly quickly, to the point where I'm actually finding it very comfortable to use (some of the online complaints had me worried a little bit).

It looks really awesome, but I'm going to wait for a price drop and a wider range of games before I buy one.

I still have Gameboy Advance games I want to play.

What is going on with these things? I called all around the PA area today and they seem to be sold out everywhere. EBGames told me to not even bother pre-ordering, because there has been a huge demand. Didn't they make enough? It's Christmas for crying out loud!

I think they made enough, but demand has exceeded WELL past their expectations. As fusterating as it is not to be able to pick on up, Nintendo can spin this as HUGE positive PR for themselves. The average person will hear that this "wicked awesome" system that is "so hard to find" so that it must be so great! Plus the diehards will still buy it anyway.

As for me, I'm waiting till the first price drop probably, as money is very tight for me right now. But rest assured, I will get one at some point.

Picked one up today -- going from a GBA to a DS will do wonders for your eyes; Shaman King: Master of Spirits is *so* much easier to play now that I can actually see contrast on my screen.

That said, I'm curious if the DS will be able to go to a full wireless capability instead of the 100-300 feet rule. We'll see, I guess.

Anyhow, I'm playing GBA games for now until XMas, when I'll be getting Urbs and Madden.

I wonder how far off a DS SP is. Seems like they could make it smaller...uhhhh, somehow.

Anyways, I'm wanting one pretty bad after trying one out but it's not really essential right now. After more people have them and mo' bettah games come out then we'll see. But it's highly enticing.
