People make it seem like it's a piece of cake to win 6 games in the NCAA Tournament. A lot can go wrong on the way to the National Championship, and any single elimination tournament is very difficult to win. It irks me when people say that a coach "can't win the big one." Sometimes they have a point, but more often than not it's just a lot of poppycock. Most coaches labeled this way coach exactly the same way during the post season as they do the rest of the year. NOT ALWAYS, but most of the time. I do think Williams made some errors in his substitution pattern against the Terps, but that is the same way he has coached the entire season, and I think it turned out pretty well. Should he of adjusted? Of course he should have. The question is, if it would have been a regular season game, would he have done things differently? Probably not, and in order to "choke" you have to freeze, change, be abnormal to your basic style. I don't think Kansas did that.
Say, Roy Williams didn't shoot 43% from the field, miss 10 free throws, and turn the ball over 16 times. He didn't create the foul trouble, nor did he give zero production (a la the bench) when the personals started racking up.
People forget it took Dean Smith 21 years to win his first title, and even then it may not have happened had a certain Georgetown guard not had a sudden case of color-blindness. During one stretch, UNC made 13 straight Sweet 16's, and brought home one lone title. Overall, Smith guided the Tar Heels to 11 Final Fours, and won twice. He was 2 for 11, and no one mentions him choking. Is it just because he was able to win one? Get Williams to the Final Four 11 times and I guarantee he gets more than two titles.
