This isn't so much a bash as an honest (and non-intentionally snarky question).

I read Keith's Slamboree '95 recap on a lark yesterday and he was going apeshit about Bischoff's calls on various kicks.

Now, granted, the calls were funny, but it made me wonder, I know Bischoff is (allegedly) a trained martial artist. There is another thread on this board about the wackiness of `Engrish' and the Oriental (specifically Japanese, I think) tendency to call things a little different (given that their language is more based on singular glyphs and all).

So the question I have is this: is there any chance Bischoff was either calling the moves as he knows them and/or was trying to be a little more `authentic' about martial arts-style kicks, or is Keith right and Bischoff's just a wanker?

It's difficult to give a unique name to every difference kick variant that you could do in martial arts. There's a lot of crossovers in names, and you there's scope for confusion whether a given kick is a jumping / spinning / reverse / heel / wheel / calf / roundhouse / low / cresent / axe kick after you've seen it.

I'm guessing that Bischoff tried to give a "legitimate" call on the kick, but got sidetracked and put too many qualifiers on. I'd say that it's not easy to get the name of a kick right if you're making live PBP. Ross gets confused about peoples *finishers* fer goodness sake! Of course, if you're asking if Bischoff had any qualifications to be doing PBP, that's a whole 'nother story.

Reasons like this are why we have named kicks and strikes - the Sidekick, Sweet Chin Music, Shining Wizards, so it's identified as a signature attack, and also makes it easier to call.

I just have to wonder where they got "front/back-leg" kicks from.

I've paid close attention over the years, and I've only ever had the one pair of legs. Maybe Bischoff learned to fight from a centaur.

It's Eric Bischoff on the mic. What were you expecting Shakespear?

come to think of that it would be funny.

Personally, I thought it was hillarious when I saw the show, and seeing it in writing just makes it better. On the other hand, it almost explains how they got so many kick variations into the THQ games.
Jumping front heel toe calf leg whip front kick to the left back side collateral i'm a retard ankle spinning armbar.
By the way, I enjoy many of the Keith-rants, even if he gets way on the egocentric side most of the time.

In a typical martial arts fighting stance, you position yourself sideways to your opponent to present a smaller target. In doing so, you put one foot further forward than the other. Your "front" leg is the one closest to your opponent and your "back" leg is the other one.

Generally speaking, you can get more power from a "back-leg" kick than a "front-leg" kick because it can add more speed due to traveling a greater distance to the target. However, a "front-leg" kick can be quicker/sneakier because it is closer and your opponent has less time to react.

Now you know too much about centaur fighting, eh? ;)
