The 38th Annual CMA Awards just finished and your winners are here.

My thoughts: Some breakthroughs by new stars were nice surprises-Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts. Also, it's surprising to realize that Kenny Chesney only won his first CMA awards tonight-Album of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year. Shame he didn't have enough time for his speech, though.

Brooks & Dunn were decent hosts in replacement of stalwart Vince Gill, but they didn't do anything remarkable.

The performances seemed to be off tonight, whether by weak vocals (George Strait, Faith Hill, Terri Clark), or bad mixing (the all-star performance of "Hey Good Looking").

I'd have to say the highlight was Big & Rich's performance. While they didn't win an award, they did bring something new to the stage of the Grand Old Opry: Cowboy Troy, a 6'4" rapping black redneck.

Nice to see Kris Kristofferson finally honoured in the CMA Hall of Fame.

Why was Alabama up for group of the year? Did they even have a single released all year?

I'm a bit surprised "Live Like You Were Dyin'" won single and song of the year, but I liked it so I'm not complaining.

I really don't have any objections with any of the awards. Good to see Chesney get entertainer of the year.

Brooks and Dunn didn't make anyone forget about Vince Gill, but they did a serviceable job.

I am NOT a country music fan, but Mrs. JJD is at least a half-assed one and since she sat through all of the ALCS and World Series she got to play the "we watch whatever YOU want"-card and we watched the first-half of the the CMA's.

- About two-thirds of the way through Tim McGraw's performance I realized he was wearing that purple scarf...WTF? That's not very manly. No sir-ee. It was like he was thinking "how WOULD P. Diddy snazz this look up?"

- Shania: the teleprompter's not going anywhere...you can look away and it'll be right back there when you look back...STOP STARING AT IT...LOOK AWAY...Good Lord she's hot.

- WTF was that Toby Keith bizarro-wrold "Mockingbird" all about? I just stared speechless at the screen for about two minutes, like watching a car crash. Seriously, WHAT??

(And was that his daughter? Mrs. JJD thought maybe she was, especially after having seen who she thought would've been her mom in the crowd.)

- Gretchen Wilson is hot in a weird way, like if she gained fifty pounds she'd still have a pretty face and people would say, "she'd be so pretty if she lost weight." Maybe she did already. And dang, she's got some BIG shoulders. And she can sing a little bit, too. Mrs. JJD was suitably impressed. Plus, every time they cut to her she looked like she couldn't believe where she was the whole night. Not exactly oozing charisma on stage, though.

- Is there anybody cuter than Martina McBride? She's one of Mrs. JJD's faves. She went a little Celine Dion on us there with her song choice, though.

- I will go to my grave convinced that except for the parts where she spoke Shania was lip-synching her song. NO WAY was she singing. She was putting too much "force" into the wasy parts of the song and it was way too polished.

- Brad Paisley deserves to die because he's married to Kimberly Williams. I know it, Mrs. JJD knows it, and you know it. I get to hear the "double-suicide-drinking song" Mrs. JJD informs me. Alison Krauss: not exactly oozing charisma, either. Wait, RICK SCHROEDER's directing country-music videos now?

- Brooks & Dunn and Mrs. JJD is channel-surfing. Told you she was a half-assed country fan. Hey, Guns & Roses "Behind the Music" is on. I'll have to watch that. Mrs. JJD is fading but I know she's holding out to see her new favorite country man Keith Urban.

- That's like four depressing country songs in a row...doesn't anybody have anything HAPPY to sing about?

- Clint Black, Lisa Hartman Black, and Lisa Hartman Black's breasts are out to present an award and it's BACK to GNR: BTM on VH1.

- Big & Rich (or, as Mrs. JJD put it, "who are THESE guys?") interesting. I think Mrs. JJD is paralyzed with wonder as she's not changing the channel as I'd expect. WHAT THE FUCK IS COWBOY TROY?!?!?! What was that? That was the worst rap since Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch did "Wild Side". That rap made "License to Ill" see deep and meaningful by comaprison. It was like they thought "well, they're country fans, they won't know this is the dumbest rap EVER."

- Wow, Steven Adler is makes Keith Richards look like Jack LaLanne.

- Kenny Chesney...*yawn*...not gonna make it much longer...

- Reba McIn--zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Mrs. JJD gave up at 9:30 PT, without seeing her boy Keith and called it a night. I didn't even complain ONE TIME, a new record for me.

Hey, you gave it a shot. I'm a huge country music fan, and last night's show bored me. It certainly didn't gain the genre any new fans, and probably turned away some fence-sitters who wanted to be wowed.

Yes, Shania was lip-synching.

Yes, Krystal is Toby Keith's daughter. And no, the world didn't need a remake of "Mockingbird."

I like Big & Rich, but their country/rap performance last night has really pissed the traditionalists off. "A disgrace", "vulgar", "crap" are representative of many comments on a country music bulletin board.

Mrs. JJD would have liked Keith Urban's acceptance speech for his surprising Best Male award-"I thought I was just there to round out the category." Funny stuff.

Again, the worst part of the whole show was the production level.

On behalf of all Canadians, we're tired of Shania Twain. She's a gloryhog, she's untalented, and worse...she's totally out of tune with Canadian country music. I'm smiling that Shania didn't get nominated for anyhting. Lord knows, of course, she'll get noms in six categories at the CCMAs next year, and she'll flake out and not attend. She's done that before.

(A funny story: a few years ago, she was nominated for a number of awards, including one wherethe voting came by calling a 1-900 number...and she never attended. When she was announced as winner, there was a loud chorus of boos. heheh!)

Big&Rich are the funniest guys in country right now. Their "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" video is the funniest thing in the world. You'll remember John Rich as half of the lead singing team (along side Richie "Dull as Dishwater" MacDonald in Lonestar) Screw country traditionalists concerning their critique of Big and Rich, though. They rule.

Alabama's retiring, so I guess a nom for group of the year is a nice thing. WHo else would you nominate? Sawyer Brown? They haven't done anything in a few years. Diamond Rio? Sixwire? Rushlow? Trick Pony? Now's not really much a time for country groups, outside of Rascal Flatts.

We accept your apology. Of course, it would be more correct to say that she's totally out of tune with music, but I digress.

It's a great time for country groups if you look outside the mainstream homogenized pap being played on the radio. Nickel Creek is putting out consistently great material and has an amazing live show. BR5-49 is one of the best bands you'll never hear on radio. Plus, I remember their bassist from a number of garage punk bands in the West Lafayette area in the 80's. Union Station is the single most talented band I've ever seen anywhere, anytime. Add in their well known frontwoman and they become an awe-inspiring act. There are lots of other groups like that out there, it's just that you'll have to go looking for them because they won't come to you on the radio.

Aside from the gloryhog part, the fact that she released almost every track off her last few CDs...I swear, Brooks and Dunn released three CDs in the same amount of time it took her to finish releasing crap off one.

If you like Union Station, perhaps you're familiar with the Cox family? I love them, and they're about as non-video friendly as you can get.

It's sad that the groups mentioned by you, Bash, won't get any radio airplay here in Canada. Irarely, if ever hear Blackhawk on the radio, outside of their earlier stuff. Now, there's a great group that's underrated, IMHO.

I'm almost glad that we don't have a country station here in my little corner of Ontario.
