Kinda feel sorry for the guy, since Ricky's departure screwed over the team, but then I think back a few years, where the Dolphins called 3 pass plays protecting a lead late against the Pats, resulting in losing the game & a playoff spot. By all accounts a great guy, but just so-so as a head coach.
So what's the buzz in S. Florida as a successor for next season? Checked the Miami Herald online, and 1 of the writers was stumping for Nick Saban. Promote this thread! | | whatever

My vote is for a QB.
Miami doesn't need everything. They have a top-tier defense and a solid receiving corps. They need a quarterback and a running back. Depending on what's out there, they might be better suited getting a runner with their first round pick. Getting a QB would mean a three-way dogfight for the starting job, whereas a great running back makes QB seem much less important. Remember, Miami was able to win 10 games with Fielder under center because they had Ricky Williams. | Roy.

You do whatever you can to try to distinguish yourself for your next job. Whoever is the caretaker through the rest of the year won't be next year's coach.
From the Dolphins' perspective, I'd think you want to lose games so that you get a better draft slot. This season is already a total loss, so who cares if you go 1-15 or 6-10? | RYDER FAKIN

I feel sorry for the guy because he's a first-class guy, cornerback Patrick Surtain said after Sunday's defeat.
It's not like guys aren't going out there giving 110 percent and laying it on the line for him. We're doing it all -- getting holding penalties, offsides, we're doing crazy stuff. How can he control that when he's on the sidelines?
Well Golly Gee...Shula managed for 30 years to install disipline and eliminate stupid errors like holding, offsides, etc. (Dolphins were tops or close to tops in "least penalized" during his reign). Surtain would be pumping gas right now for saying something like that playing for Shula. Lead by example - Dave W. never did that...
Butch Davis is the most likely candidate, which is fine with me. I'm thinking he is out in Cleveland and the Fish would be a good fit for him. He may or may not want "full control" - which would probably blow the deal if he did. No one takes Spurrier all that seriously - he's worse than O.J. for keeping his name in lights. I have doubts about Saban - he seems like one of those "college coaches for life".
I hope they just ride this season out and try not to fuck up a Top 5 pick. And then don't draft a QB, for God's sake. Brees is right there!! Ricky owes some major cash and still has trade value to suckers like Oakland and Dallas, which would turn into a nice pair or three of OL and a solid RB...it's not like the Dolphins are horrible - just poorly coached. I'd have no quarrel with Davis as a hire if they went that way, though I wouldn't think a guy who would have just gotten fired from his last coaching job and without a playoff win would have enough leverage for total control...stuff like that is for the coaches with a better track record (i.e. Parcells, Johnson, Holmgren, Pat Riley, etc.) than Davis. Besides, the Browns turfed out Carmen Policy to hand the keys over to Davis completely and it's not going as well as Cleveland wanted it to. So that lessens his ability to ask for it with anyone else.

Brees would be a good fit, considering he's just starting to hit the switch and if he can put up those type of passing numbers with Tomlinson behind him AND Marty Schottenheimer on the sidelines, you'd think he could be productive anywhere.
EDIT: re Aaron...I wouldn't be surprised if you saw both members of F-Bomb given their walking papers at the end of the season. They clear that up, and plus with Seau's salary most likely being cleared along with maybe a trade or so of any disgruntled Fins (Surtain's all but out and said he wants a trade), there'll be room under the cap, although team policy has always been against doling out the monster signing bonuses for free agents/draftees. It depends how committed Huizenga is to reversing Miami's fortune.
The other thing you can file under "wishful thinking" is that Edgerrin James was very much on the record in the Herald after Ricky left that he wanted to come home. Although it could be a negotiating ploy with the Colts just the same.
Although with the notion Miami might look to clear the decks and rebuild after this season, I probably would want Davis over any of the college coaches, although I don't think I'd let him anywhere near the draft; most notably, he vetoed the other people in the war room that day to take Gerard Warren over Richard Seymour but the Browns draft-picking in the last 4 years has been spotty at best.
Although coming back around to on-topic, Wanny was questionable/doubtful at best as a game coach, had a sideline demeaner like a substitute teacher and the stupid penalty factor seemed to go up and up over the last few years. And I remember the Shula era just as well as anyone, too...and that shit NEVER used to happen. There was shitty luck involved in this season, yes...but it is worth noting that one of the reasons Ricky chose to walk in the first place (according to his PR rep Dan LeBetard) is that he was still peeved over carrying the ball 30+ times in a meaningless season finale last year because he felt Wanny was using him so the coach could save his own ass.
Plus it serves no purpose if your coach has been on a hot seat ever since Christmas 2002 and no results have yielded from it. So it was for the best that they pulled the trigger.

My tops for Miami picking up a QB last year were Warner, Couch, Brees and maybe Collins. Of course, Dave W. went for goddamn Feely of all people...
Brees is playing like he is wanting serious free agent money, which is good to see. I have no problem whatsoever with the Fish paying him what he wants...and neither should Miami's management - they gave that creep Fiedler 5 million per and he is not even close to competent, much less on a Brees or Warner level - and they will most likely have Feidler and Ricky off the books next year anyway (one way or the other), so do it, says I. Depending on how it plays out, I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't
I just hope he doesn't play *too* good - like good enough to where SD does something silly like keep him!

Miami is playing for draft position now, period. When you lose two KICKERS to injury in one season and lose your next game because of a missed PAT, it's just not meant to be. If there is a top level RB available, you gotta take him, not only because a Ricky can make Fiedler win 10 games, but because a running back can be ready to go in his first season. QBs more often than not need the extra time, and the Dolphins need to bounce back big next year.
Having said that, if there's an elite calibre QB available and only some good running backs, take the QB. Edgerrin James has already expressed interest in playing in Miami next year and you never know who will be this year's Corey Dillon or Eddie George in the good-but-available-for-trade department. There are many more backs out there, and surely whoever winds up trading for Ricky Williams will be able to (or perhaps need to for cap reasons) send one back in the deal. | Spaceman Spiff

I think Belichick would out-scheme Weis, because Weis starts falling in love with triple reverse passes to a guard when trying to hold a lead late. If they don't make a run for Piolli as GM they are stupid though, as he has been Belichick's right-hand man. If I were to go for a Patriot Coordinator as coach, I'd take Crennel, as he has the defensive pedigree and has followed the path of Parcells and Belichick. 7 months later, and a second round pick for A.J. Feely just looks funnier and funnier. Hell, they probably could have packaged their 1 and a 2 to move up for Big Ben in this year's draft. Now, with Wannestadt gone, it means Norv Turner and Dennis Erickson are running neck and neck for Worst Head Coach in the NFL. | haz

To finish the job properly, the rest of the front office needs to go too. President Jones is gone after this year, retiring, so you bring in a whole new regime and start from scratch.
Pioli is the name mentioned for President as well as a possibility for GM. If he is here, I would suspect a hard run is made at Weis. If it isn't him, who knows.
I certainly would start rethinking my allegiance to this team if Spurrier is hired. I am not much of a fan of Butch Davis either. Too bad it didn't happen last year, because I have always been a fan of Dennis Green's and he would've been a good one for this team.
In terms of players, Brees would look good to me and so would James. However, I don't think either matter if you don't actually sign some guys that know how to block. It won't matter what QB is back there, they will be running for their life.
Draft some linemen, trade Williams for a lineman, see what you can do to sign someone like James or Brees and let the chips fall where they may.
