Nomar returning to the Cubs under a one year contract wouldn't be any sort of a surprise, but please tell me the benefit to a sign and trade of Clement and Pedro. Both are unrestricted free agents, and are free to go whereever they want. If Boston or Chicago wanted Clement or Pedro, they'd probably just negotiate the deal themselves.
Besides, when a player signs a contract with a new team, he can't be traded until like May of the season that the contract is for. (Or something like this.) | TigerFan55

The Tribune Co. would have to swallow another huge contract, and if they can't move Sammy and his $18M, I doubt there would be room. Their failure this year wasn't a talent problem, it was a chemistry problem. Bashing the announcers is just absurd. I would like to see them resign Nomar, as he would fit in well with this team, when they are actually healthy. They need to do something about the outfield since Alou left, and the Sammy situation should be dealt with. We'll see what the hot stove cooks up this winter for them. | thecubsfan

- There are no sign and trades in baseball - why wouldn't Boston just sign Clement? Or the Cubs sign Pedro? Why would prosepcts be involved?
- The Cubs don't want Pedro. | BigSteve

| #5 Posted on 8.11.04 1302.26 Reposted on: 8.11.11 1302.40 | | I saw on the Sporting News website that Boston has offered/will offer Pedro a 2 year deal worth 27 million with an option for 2007. They go onto speculate that Pedro's agents will make a counter offer worth substantially more. Now, I know that it's the agents jobs to ask for as much as possible, but isn't 13.5 a year actually overpaying for Pedro? The guy had a 3.90 ERA last year, his highest ever, and *only* won 16 games for the World Series Champions. So essentially you're paying a ton of money for a sometimes great, increasingly often hittable pitcher who is injury prone and won't go more than 6/7 a game and probably won't hit 200 innings consistently. Point being, Pedro, while not washed up, doesn't seem to be the ace that he was two or three years ago. But then again, someone (Angels?) are probably gonna give hime what he wants, so there's no sense in me bitching about it. | Quezzy

Well according to Around the Horn there is a rumor of the Dodgers taking Sosa off the Cubs hands for SHawn Green, don't know how much of a contract difference there is there.
I still don't think Pedro is going to be a Cub though. | Whitebacon

| #7 Posted on 8.11.04 2018.09 Reposted on: 8.11.11 2024.07 | | The difference in salary is pretty close for next season, the main disparity comes in 06 and an option for Sosa in 07. Darren Dreifort has also been rumored to be a part of this deal. If he had shown any kind of capability of staying healthy, I would do that deal for a one-year payroll increase in a heartbeat. It gives me pause as it is now, but I can still justify doing it. With Hendry's recent track record, he'll probably steal some prospect from the Dodgers in the process. | Abmulabmu

Don't listen to this guy. He owes me a billion dollars from the 2003 Oscars. Also, in other news, rumor has it that this rumor is retarded. | thecubsfan
