I got a PS2 and a 32 mg memory card for my birthday in September. I popped the memory card into the slot and the PS2 was not able to read the card. I went into the system menu and tried the PS2 to read the card but that didn't work, it just said "no card in place" or something to that effect. I also tried all of the old tricks like blowing on the circuits and looking for dust in the port. The memory card is not a Sony brand but a generic (I forget the name).

I talked to my girlfriend about the card and she said that her card (Sony) never worked either. On the other hand my best friend has 2 memory cards (one Sony and one generic) that work just fine.

Is this a widespread issue or am i just missing something? Will i have to get a Sony memory card and not the generic? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Generic usually means total crap, unfortunately. That's one of the reasons why Sony says to only buy Sony stuff. Of course, they also want all the money, but I've been burned too many times by crappy peripherals to not buy Sony. I've found that my PS2 is more susceptible to breakdown and/or malfunctions when I'm using a non-Sony product, as I've had both a controller and a memory card just stop working for me.

The only non-Sony peripherals I'll put anywhere near my PS2 is anything made by MadCatz. The only product of theirs I've had problems with was their controller/screen combination device.

Funny, I'm the opposite. I've never trusted MadCatz memory cards. I've lost a lot of saves from my PS1 back in the day.

Did you try switching which slot the memory card was in? I've noticed my PS2 likes some cards in slot 1 and some in slot 2. It is especially picky when playing PS1 games.

IF you remember with the original Playstation, if you used a 3rd party non-Sony controller/memory card the system would sometimes "re-write itself" and stop recognizing any Sony made controllers or memory cards. And from there on in you had no choice but to use only 3rd party controllers/memory cards.

Maybe same thing going on here.

At the time the original Playstation came out I worked at a little self owned game store and seen it literally every day.

Sony is as Sony does...only use Sony or use at own risk.
