Not getting much help elsewhere, so I thought I'd try here.

I was wondering if it's possible to encode a multiple bitrate .wmv file, reference it within an html page, and have the file detect the user's connection speed and play the appropriate file (for example, a low, medium, or high quality stream).

I've encoded before using Premiere Pro and Windows Media Encoder, but I've always simply made three separate files (low, medium, and high) and pointed to them individually, as in having the user pick what quality they preferred. What I'm trying to do now is have a user click a "play video" type link and have it figure out which file they should see based on their connection speed.

Is this even possible? If so, can someone explain it or point me to a site/page that explains it? Thanks ahead of time.

Here's an article that describes one way to detect connection speed. It basically uses javascript to test the load time of the page. It's not going to be 100% due to caching if you're not careful though.
