After shutting out the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 last night , the Boston Red Sox became one of the most improbable World Series winners in the history of baseball despite a payroll of just under $128,000,000.
“I tell you what, Joe, this is a gritty bunch of guys who just gutted it out,” Tim McCarver said to Joe Buck during Game 2. “It’s almost unbelievable that a team led by a $20 million right fielder, a $12 million ace and an $18 million #2 starter could pull this off. There was talk about them not having the talent, but they surprised a lot of people so. Who knew?”
FOX Sports announcer Joe Buck says he’s just happy that the team finally got the recognition it deserved.
“Almost all the good teams go through this at some point. Look at the Twins. Three years ago no one knew who Torri Hunter was. But the Twins got into the playoffs and now he’s a household name,” said Buck.
“It would have been a shame if players like Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling would have had to play in obscurity the rest of the
lives. Hopefully, this World Series has introduced these guys to people outside of Boston.”

Yes, but it wouldn't be nearly as funny since the Yankees and their fans don't bitch and moan like little girls about another team spending so much money.... IMHO.

AND, according to the USA Today's Salaries Database the top three payrolls in the Majors were the Yankees $184 mil, the Red Sox $127 mil, and the Angels $100 mil. So although the Red Sox had a payroll of $27 million more than Anaheim, the Yankees payoll was $57 million more than Boston's. Or to put it another way:
Boston + Tampa Bay + Milwaukee = Yankees

A couple of points...
1. If you are refering to Red Sox fans whining about the Yanks payroll, I have to say that not all of us do. I know John Henry did complain after the Yanks got A-rod about their spending and believe me, he got no sympathy from Red Sox fans for making that comment. I'm also willing to guess that some non-Red Sox fans bitch about the Yanks spending too.
2. The article would still be funny because any team that spends that much should in theory win the World Series, especially with the Yanks payroll being so far above every other team. | The Thrill
