After a day's delay due to shipping problems, I spent a few hours last night with the game. The big draw is your ability to answer with either a snarky or polite response. It's going to take some time before I start another game to see what happens when you play mostly polite, but I get the feeling this was meant to be played in the most sarcastic vein possible.

The battle system is a little stiff, making some of the fights more difficult than I expected, but hey, that means I won't be beating it that quickly. Blocking requires timing your blocks, so when you get swarmed with enemies, you're better off running and using a summoned helper to take the heat off.

Apparently there are over a dozen songs (with the bouncing ball so you can sing along) of which I've seen 3. So far, decent stuff. I'm hoping for some dancing along the way, as so far they've just had the singers standing there and swaying.

Rent or buy, it's definitely worth a look.

Is there *any* resemblance between this Bard's Tale and the original Bard's Tale series from the 1980s? Those RPGs were amazing for the time... I'd love to see updates of them with modern technology. This looks nothing like them, however -- thoughts?

I never played the older ones, but the designer is the same. My wife has gotten alot of chuckles wandering past when I was playing and I've found myself singing along with every song in the game, thanks to the "follow the ball" lyrics. The period right before the final battle and endings are a nice twist and play out.

As I said, the fighting boils down largely to button mashing in close-quarters fighting. If you can get some of your summoned minions to take the brunt of a fight, you can rely on the bow which will save your thumb some work. :-)

Maybe give it a rent?
