Never, no matter how tempting, give anyone crap about saving files on their local PC instead of the networked drive that is backed up.

One day, it will come back to haunt you if you do.

Damn laptop.

The laptop beeped, then the hard drive started doing the click of death. I knew something was wrong... Flea received the last instant message that that particular configuration was ever able to send out.

Interesting note: AIM apparently does not need to use the hard drive at all when in use. It was the only thing that was still working when everything else froze up.

The message to Chris was sent via GAIM on a Morphix CD when I was trying to recover files during the sporadic access that I had to the HD.

The first thing the help desk guy in charge of laptops asked was "You don't use the local drive, right? Everything's on the network drive?" Why the hell did they buy me a laptop with a 60 gig drive if I wasn't supposed to use it for anything?

Luckily, 37 GB of the drive was call audio that I was transporting from one office to another, and it was offloaded last Thurday. The other project that I had been working on off of the laptop had been mailed out as a zip file earlier in the day.

I still lost about 20% of my favorites from IE though, and all of my prefs for Mozilla, and a bunch of crap I had on the laptop that I shouldn't have (I was dumping my digital camera there. Luckily, most of the pics are on the webserver as well.)

Our Accounting department learned this lesson a few years ago when we got hit hard by a virus, and one of our IT guys sent out a patch he wrote and ordered everybody to run.

His "fix" formatted the drive of every user who ran it until somebody yelled "STOP!".

That's when we learned how many people saved their work to the network.

(I actually use the network, but use my C drive as a backup.)
