I thought it was bad enough that the Rose bowl has been "named-out" to Citi. Is it official that every bowl is "named-out?" Is the Emerald Bowl named after Emerald Nuts? Or just after an object, like Orange or Cotton?
SBC may have bought the name, but it will always be THE BIG GAME. This is like how all the Reagan freaks got his name tacked on to National airport. I don't know what happens away from the Beltway, but here it is still called National.
Everyone is making money off of all this except the players. There should be some sort of payment plan to the players outside of the scholarships. Like a piece of the Bowl payouts given to the winning players in equal shares. Even if it's $1000 a player.
I am surprised that the SBC logo won't be on the players or field like a bowl game is. I'm pleasantly surprised.

That seems like a low price, to me, all other asinine issues aside. How much do bowl naming rights usually go for? I know it's not a bowl game, but you'd think they'd be able to get more than a measly million for such a high-profile game.

For UM traditionalists like myself this is bad news, but from what I understand, the Red River Shootout this year was also presented by SBC. I can't say as I noticed too much mention of SBC from watching the game, though, so hopefully it won't be that obtrusive.
Michigan Stadium has always prided itself on having NO outside advertising anywhere within the stadium grounds, and it hasn't been decided yet that there will be an advertisement in the stadium next year. However, AD Bill Martin has said deals like this are only the beginning.
It's tough for schools like UM to generate the same revenue as others when they have NO outside advertising, NO luxury suites and, until this year, NO "personal seat licenses" or its ilk. Even with 110,000+ fans each week.
But, I'm with Zeruel - as long as there's no field or player markings, cool.

ON TOPIC - Meh. I wish we could turn back the clock and not have the FedEx Orange Bowl et al., but we can't. Just don't patronize the sponsor or refer to the game by anything other than its traditional name.

Thank You! Thank God I'm not the only idiot that gets majorly pissed off when I see everything being sold for its naming rights. Why did we have to drop the citrus part? And people thought that it was bad when we had the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl....bah to this shit.
