I guess this thread is inspired by watching the Final Four
this afternoon , but it got me to thinking , is there any basket ball player who made a transition into wrestling or wrestlers who had some kind of basketball background ?
I couldn't think of any myself .

With all their endurance and their grappling skills on the court , you would think a basketballer would make a good brawler .

And don't say Dennis Rodman !

Since you forbade me from saying Dennis Rodman, I'll say Karl Malone.

I think most basketball players are to goofy/clumsy to be pro wrestlers.

I'm not sure I agree with that. As far as being pure "athletes" (strength, endurance, speed, agility, etc.), I think basketball players, on the whole, are the best of the professional sports athletes. They may not be too bright, and most of them seem to be hotheads, so working for Vince could be disaster.

Didn't Kevin Nash play college basketball? Well, even if he did it would only be validating your statement.

I think Big Show played basketball in high school, but I'm not sure about college.

For the smaller ones, that may be true. But someone like Shaq can't even throw a punch right because he's too slow. There are three kinds of basketball players:

1)Big, powerful guys. They tend to not be the quickest or most agile of the world's athletes.

2)Small, speedy guys. They would have the balance and agility to perform in the ring, but these guys are for the most part pretty small.

3)Guys who don't fit in either of the first 2. Magic Johnson wasn't the strongest of players. He also wasn't the fastest. But he was a great player.

Now that you mention that , it seems like that I might have read somewhere that he played for the UT Vols , but I have no idea if that is correct or not .

Nash did play at Tennessee before screwing up his knee, I believe. And Giant Gonzales was on Argentina's National team...

Well...

When he debuted in WCW, Former Alliance Superstar Mark Jindrak came in with a "Too Edgy For The NCAA" gimmick that was just SO stupid, they totally had me believing it was real. The guy wrestled in a jersey and brought a ball to the ring for Christ(happyeaster)sake.

So... I did nothing to answer your question. Sorry.

Nash was definitely at UT. I want to say Big Show played college ball somewhere, but since I'm not 100% sure, I won't.

May I just say I'm disappointed that nobody has gone for the easy and obvious one here, since who can forget Slam Dunk, the chokeslamming menace of WOW?!

On a semi-related note, anybody remember when Mark Henry (yes, Mark Henry) made a dunk on the Conan O'Brien show?

Karl Malone wasn't bad... He could never make a full time jump - but as far as celebrities go, he didn't come off half bad at all.

The Undertaker had a basketball scholarship to Texas Wesleyan in the early '80s, and played for about three years, I think.

Kevin Nash also played professionally in Europe, I believe. France, I think? I don't remember.

The Big Show played college ball at Wichita State.

Okay, so far we have Nash, Big Show, possibly Slam Dunk (don't know if she played for real), Giant Gonzales, Undertaker and Mark Henry has made at least one dunk. Not off to a very good start of proving that basketball players can be good wrestlers, are we?
I believe it's a little known fact that Kevin Nash used to complain to his coach when the one of the opposition called him a bitch. Apparently they adlibbed that, since that line wasn't in the playbook. ;)

Karl Malone wasn't -completely- horrible. His diamond cutter was decent, at least. But, then, I was comparing him with Rodman, so maybe he just seemed better by comparison.

Most basketball players have a leaner look, whereas pro wrestlers, outside of the cruisers, tend to be bulky, thick. I think some smaller point guard types could make decent cruisers if they trained, but I can't see the bigger guys really making the grade.

Wrestling moves probably work best with a low center of gravity. Basketball players are just too damn tall.

All the guys mentioned here -- Nash, Show, UT -- are these not the lumbering Frankensteins of the wrestling world?

Lumbering Frankensteins? Maybe...personally, I've found myself with a soft spot for UT as of late. I really enjoyed his feud and match with Flair and I think he's generally found the right niche with his character. His ring work isn't technically spectacular, but he looks like a legitimate ass-kicking machine in there, and he comes off as a big, scary bastard. Show is okay for short spurts, but not for any match longer than, say, five or six minutes. Nash is deteriorated to nothing, although he was okay as Diesel for a while back in his first run in the WWF.

As for other tall guys, Kane can just plain go in general, I think, with a decent level of speed (although he admittedly doesn't always show it). Test isn't bad, although he's not quite as huge as the other aforementioned.

The worst tall guy was of course Giant Gonzales, who, while freakishly tall, was really f'in skinny and had not one bit of believable offense, selling, or even movement. THAT guy was Frankenstein.
