So I bought American Idiot (the new Green Day album) last week and I have been listening to it virtually non stop since then. I didn't really listen to any Green Day before this album and I didn't know hardly anything about them. I happen to have an extra $20 this week and i was thinking that maybe I should get another Green Day CD. If I like American Idiot, then what Green Day album should I buy? Thanks

Warning is actually my favorite Green Day album, but I think the album that best compares to American Idiot is Insomniac. Just avoid Nimrod unless you end up liking all the other albums. The pre-Dookie stuff is more for Green Day fans/completists than anyone else too.

I would agree that Nimrod is the weakest of their albums, but I would tell people to at least download the song "Redundant." I don't know if it was released as a single off the album, but it was included in the greatest hits CD that Green Day put out. I found that song to be amazing and a real gem off a bad album.

I'll second "Warning". That one is (nearly as) good as "American Idiot". Far and away their most underrated release. (I'd actually steer clear of "Insomniac". Mostly a desperate attempt to scream "we're really punk!", and it wasn't until they abandoned all such preconceptions that they really became a truly *great* band.)

nimrod. might be my favorite Green Day album, but yeah Warning is highly-underrated...I really love how the production and the guitars sound on it. I believe "Redundant" was the 3rd single off nimrod.

Or try "International Supervideos" which is their greatest hits album for a more broad approach.

Depends where you sit inregards to greatest hits albums though I guess.

Well, if you like Green Day for thier "punk" music, spend that twenty bucks on some old school punk. London Calling by the Clash would be MY recomendation. But, if you want more GREEN DAY stuff, Dookie is pretty tight.

I kind of think this is overstated thanks to their Behind the Music, because they never again got as sophomoric and juvenile and "fun" as they were on Dookie and before that. It was just part of the maturing of their sound. It's their heaviest album, but the second-heaviest is probably American Idiot, and both have the same kind of bleak undertones. I think as far as the albums go, Insomniac just best compares to AI, and if AI is where you started with Green Day (and you liked it a lot), then that might be where I go next because it's similar but different. It is but it...isn't. Also, the songs on Insomniac are generally very good ("Stuart and the Ave.", "Westbound Sign", "Walking Contradiction", "Armatage Shanks", "Geek Stink Breath", "Brat" stand out for me)

I don't really think London Calling should be called a punk album, since it isn't. London Calling is my favorite album that's ever been made by anyone though, so I do agree with the recommendation of it.

"London Calling" is an outstanding work, but I agree with Scott that it is not really punk in the sense that most people think of punk. It is angry, yes, but in a more political way that most people think of punk.

OKay, London Calling may not be what the majority of the USA thinks is punk, and to a degree, I can agree with that. However it is the best ALBUM by a punk BAND, so perhaps that is what I should have stated.

Any Green Day album is great, but I recommend the early stuff...so you can see where they came from.

Go out and pick up Kerplunk...great stuff

An even better group to look into based on the above quote would be the Buzzcocks... Definitely a great band to check out if you like Green Day.

I have all of Green Day's major label albums, and they have really progressed and changed their sound over the years.

For the best of old-school Green Day, get "Dookie".

For the best of new-school Green Day, get "Warning" and "American Idiot".

Or just buy their greatest hits album "International Superhits" and get all the good stuff plus a good idea of what you'll like the best. Personally, I like it all, but I've grown up with it.

Oh man, how could I forget the buzzcocks? Terrific songs. Somehow I always forget them when the old school punk discussions come about.

The Buzzcocks indeed are awesome. I heard them for the first time when they opened for Pearl Jam at a few of the shows I went to during PJ's tour in the summer of 2003. I'm not a big fan of any punk, but the Buzzcocks are one of the few exceptions after that.

In case you're concerned about cost or the number of songs, many of Green Day's albums (Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning) total only 35-40 minutes long. So that's like 1-3 minutes per song, which is typical for punk rock.

Also, IMO, many of the albums before Warning sound the same. Don't get Nimrod if you're expecting all the songs to sound like "Time of your life".

Hehe, I wonder how many bought the album because they heard the song in some sappy ceremony just to be surprised what Green Day is... I think Nimrod is a good album also, Green Day is really one of those bands that even though the revolve if you like their sound I don't think their's one album a real disappointment or embarrassment.

I like the idea of getting their greatest hits album and then you can see which songs from that you like best and get the original album they are on... But if you want a non greatest hit album, I would say Warning is probably closest to American Idiot.

Warning is probably the closest to American Idiot. Especially in the performances, which tend to be more mid-tempo and (in my opinion) uninspired and unenergetic. Kerplunk is a great album, whoever recommended it, BUT I don't think it's a good recommendation for someone who just discovered them through their current material. It's raw and somewhat juvenile, unlike the self-consciously "adult" American Idiot.
