I'll play the middle and guess that it's either one of two things judging by the picture: an audio pack like is being suggested or it could be the outline for a bulletproof vest, and I can understand that possibly being Secret Service policy at this point in an election.

EDIT: Grimis beat me to the now-bipartisan-theoried bulletproof vest suggestion by about 0.4 seconds.

Even if the "bulge" in that picture is a bullet proof vest and it wasn't a wire for this one debate, it still appears as if Bush has been getting fed lines and prompts for many of his speeches and events in the past. Such was witnessed during a D-Day event in France, which was broadcast on CNN, where apparently the frequency of his earpiece was picked up and somebody prompting Bush as to his next lines could be heard.

Well, there is also an odd-looking wire-like bulge between his shoulder blades. Make of that what you will.

Maybe this explains his "Let me finish!" line in the middle of the debate. Maybe he really WAS talking to the man in his ear. Maybe it also explains his bad posture. Too bad we'll probably never know.

It is pretty clearly a vest, I think. I mean, really - if he were wired, you would think that they would use something a little more contemporary. Do they even sell devices that bulky anymore?

It's doesnt really look THAT bulky to me, but it does make me wonder if that IS some sort of ear-piece device, why did they mount it way up there?

And why would that sort of device make him change his posture (unless he was leaning forward to concentrate on what he was being fed?)?

It's apprently not a bulletproof vest - according to the Times, the White House has confirmed that:


    "There was nothing under his suit jacket," said Nicolle Devenish, a campaign spokeswoman.

    "It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric."

    Ms. Devenish could not say why the "rumpling" was rectangular.

    Nor was the bulge from a bulletproof vest, according to campaign and White House officials; they said Mr. Bush was not wearing one.

Not really off subject here, but did anyone see that small black thing sticking out of Bush's right ear last night?

I also noticed that they did not have any close ups of Bush from the right side either. His left side, yes, Kerrys left and right sides, yes, but not of Bush... CONSPIRACY!

How hilarious would it be to see Bush trying to hide his right ear. He'll greet Kerry during the handshakes and direct his unmarked left ear trying to keep his right ear hidden from Kerry's view, the moderator then would come up & Bush would swing his head to the other side trying to hide the ear piece... I just thought of something, what if a Yankee fan sneaks in a walkman to listen to the playoff game during the debate and it interferes with Bush's ear piece reception. You'd hear quotes from Bush like "Saddam had Weapons of mass destruction, he used deadly A-rods on his own people" and "North Korea is a concern, I have talks just this week with Japanese Prime Minister Matsui about it".
