It's not their content, though. No; that's as biting as ever. What really gets my goat is that you now have to PAY to access their archives!

I suppose they can do whatever they want, as they're a business and all. But it just galls me that I would now have to pay to read an old, favorite article.

Anyone else have similar thoughts? Or am I just a crotchety old man?

I think they were afraid keeping the complete archives online would cut into their book sales.

I have similar thoughts, but I'm also a crotchety old man (in these parts). The thing that gets me is paying for something that was formerly free and accessible. I don't do it, unless it's something REALLY worthwhile (The W).

Well, by donating, I'm paying for it. Kinda, sorta, in my own small way. :)

I agree, you shouldnt have to pay for an old article. But the way they have advertised the pay section it looks like they have alot of other stuff to help make it worth the costs, so at least you arent just paying for something that used to be free.

I'm just as frustrated with the Onion as I am with Bill Simmons, ESPN2's Sports Guy. Now, except for pieces from September/October, you have to susbcribe to ESPN's Insider service to get at all his columns. I would gladly reread his archives if they were free, but I'll go without if it means $40 per year.

I doubt that was Simmons' idea. Bloody everything is "Insider" content now. I miss Neyer, but at least Gammons is still free. And, uh, Kruk.

Good lord, I had no idea about this. What a bunch of utter bullshit....that archive, in addition to providing some great entertainment when you're bored during the afternoon, was also my first step to introducing friends to the awesomeness that is Simmons. Simmons (or, more likely, the money-grubbers at espn.com) might've cost themselves a lot of new readers.

Simmons has repeatdly says he doesn't want to go Insider because he doesn't want the pressure of trying trying to live up to the subscription cost every article.

Between this, and all transcripts of chats being moved to Insider, I think the new idea is to model newspaper models, where you have to pay to see all non-recent articles.

My mistake: I didn't mean to suggest that Simmons himself is behind this. In fact, I'm pretty sure that he's the guy most aggravated about it. His contract is likely not tied to netting X number of views, and he knows his audience well enough to know that drunks and slackers alike enjoy rereading his angry screeds.

As for what Big Bad said: I agree, the Simmons archive was such a great way to suck friends into compulsive Simmons reading. All it took was a link to "Roger Clemens in the Anti-Christ" to make a friend of mine a die-hard Simmons fan for life. Without easy access to some of those old greats, I think he might not be getting new fans to the same degree he was before.

EDIT: To agree with Palpatine (and add a letter): Ugh, Kruk. There should probably be a whole other thread devoted to the peerless cliched insipidity that is Kruk.

Definitely seems that way. That's what irks me along with the Simmons archives, is that you have to pay to see past chats. ESPN Sportsnation now pretty much runs chats with various people from like 10 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon. Since i'm in school, and i'm sure most of you work at the same time, I miss all the chats. I used to come home and waste a good hour or so reading the chats for that day. But now you can only read them for free if you're sitting there as they happen. If you're there like a minute after the chat is over it's moved to Insider.

IGN is another page that I used to go to a lot but has moved a lot to some kind of subscription.

Simmons is doing his chats on NBA.com now for the sole purpose of keeping them free.

Damn it!!! I can't believe they want to make me pay for those old columns. Yeah, I've already read most of them, but I still wanna read them again. This sucks. Simmons said he'd never wanna charge people to read his stuff and now this happens. I know it's not his fault so I'm not blaming him. Wasn't the whole purpose of having Sports Guy's World page to have all of his stuff in one area? And now there's no archives? Oh good!! I hate ESPN now. Sorry I had to vent this really pisses me off? BTW, does anyone know what the deal with Insider is? I know it's $40, but do you get the magazine with the subscription to that?

Hell, I get ESPN the Magazine for free. It started coming to my apartment over a year ago, then followed me to my house. All this despite the fact that I have never once ordered ESPN the magazine, never given money to ESPN, and never been billed for it. Also, I didn't even "win" the subscription for filling out a survey somewhere. So, to my way of thinking, if they really want to make money, they can stop printing a magazine (unpaid for, by people who don't want it)* and put their saved money toward making Simmons' $&#%@& free again!

* - I don't mean to suggest that they stop printing the magazine entirely. Just my copy. They can keep it. Many of the pieces in it are on their websites anyway.

That exact thing happened to me too. Just started showing up one day. Followed me to my next apartment-never got a bill. And then one day, just as soon as I had gotten used to it showing up every two weeks, it just quit coming. Gone just as quickly as it came. Bizarre.
