Originally posted by Jimmy O I don't know about Washington, but in Minnesota, the registration sticker is also registered to you, like the plates. There is a serial number on the sticker, which can also be traced to you. Although, I'm not sure how close the police look at that when they pull someone over.
Same deal in Florida, but at a glance, unless you ran through the registration on account of being stopped for somthing else (i.e. using a stolen vehicle for stealing other property), at a glance it wouldn't be noticeable
Although, there are W's in here who are in law enforcement or formerly in law enforcement...how often on a patrol do you just check a tag number at random? I'm curious.
Wisconsin doesn't have a serial number on the sticker. Never noticed those on other plates before. | JayJayDean

It's still driveable, though, and considering I just put $1800 worth of work into it in May I'm not sure I wouldn't just like to drive it beat up for a while. Anybody dealt with anything similar (with regards to the insurance company's position)?

| #24 Posted on 16.10.04 1128.06 Reposted on: 16.10.11 1129.02 | My mom's 1990 Toyota Camry got stolen a few years ago (here's a link to a page I put together detailing our trip to the impound yard!). It took our insurance company forever to finally decide that the car was a total loss, but once they did the check came pretty quick. I think Blue Book said our car was worth about $4500 if in super excellent condition, we ended up with about $3200. Cant argue with that.
When it first got stolen we still had about 3-4 more payments to make on it, so we were a little nervous we wouldnt get any money for it (since we didnt own it outright yet). But by the time the insurance company finished dragging their feet on our claim, we had JUST made the last payment and we received the pink slip from the leinholder just in time to send it off to the insurance company. Smooth.
I had a bunch of stereo equipment in it from when the car was mine and I didnt know they were gonna total it yet, so it didnt occur to me that I should take them out of the car when we saw it in the yard. Plus since I bought it all at the swap meet, I didnt have any receipts for any of it anyway, so I kinda got screwed outta my stuff
Other than that & having to wait forever for our check, I'd say the whole experience was pretty painless.
(JJD, thats kinda weird that the impound yard would charge YOU storage, it's not like it was your idea to bring it there.) | JayJayDean

The adjuster called me Friday and told me their market research placed a $4680 value on my truck, and that with the repair estimate at $3800 so far that they would like to declare it a total loss.
When I got into the first wreck with the truck about 2000 the guy at the dealership told me that AT THAT TIME the trade-in value for my truck was $2800 with the wreck involved. (It WOULD HAVE been $3500 without the wreck, and despite the fact that State Farm's adjuster told me "they had no way to evalute a loss in value due to the wreck" when I told her about my conversation with the dealer they agreed to pay the $700 difference in the settlement.)
So four years, a rear-ender and ANOTHER wreck to the front-end later I'll be getting probably $2500-3000 MORE for the truck than I would've gotten as a trade-in with NONE of the hassles of selling the truck myself. (The Blue Book value was $4185.)
I think I'd thank the guy for stealing it if I had the chance, if it wouldn't serve to encourage him. | DJ FrostyFreeze

Originally posted by JJD BUT, the cops verified that he's MOST LIKELY the guy and that they took him in yesterday afternoon because he had outstanding warrants and they're charging him for stealing the truck (as far as the cops could say, anyway.) Hope you enjoy your trip back to jail, buddy. The guy lived in the area, too. What a maroon.
You are gonna go to his trial & whatnot too, right? YOU. HAVE. TO.
When my OTHER CAR got stolen in 1998 & we picked it up from the yard, it still had some dude's briefcase in it. Looks like he was a lawyer because it was full of law firm business cards & legal-looking court documents. At first I was all "Some rat bastard lawyer stole my POS car!", until I realized that the theif probably robbed that guy too. Either way, I figured that I had some HOTT evidence on my hands & I better tell the cops about it right away! Of course they didnt give a crap when I called them, and of course I felt like a total loser for thinking that they would. | pieman
