which sucks. I've never had my vehicle stolen before. I've already spoken with the police and my insurance company is supposed to be calling me soon to start a claim, but is there anything I should be wary of that might screw me over later?

Insurance companies in general. God I hate insurance companies.

That really sucks man. Did they ask the question of whether or not is was locked, because they could come back to be problematic if it was not, believe it or not.

It was locked. It was sitting in front of my office (though not when I came back this morning, obviously). My key was sitting right on my desk where I'd left it as I've been driving Mrs. JJD's car the last few days.

The thing that slays me is that my truck is (was?) a 1997 Ford Ranger, BASE model. Four-cylinder, standard transmission, power nothing, etc. Meanwhile there's a newer (probably 2000) Ford Taurus sitting RIGHT THERE next to it the whole time, but they take my truck instead. Ah well.

I am assuming you were carrying Comprehensive coverage and not just Collision.

First there is the 30 day waiting period in which the insurance company will wait before the truck will be determined to have been stolen. No money will be paid out prior to the expiration of the waiting period. In the meantime, they will determine the Blue Book value of the truck and any options/improvements that may have been made to the car. You may have bought new tires recently or even had some engine work done but that won't matter when determining value. They will also factor in the mileage - if it is what they consider high mileage, they will deduct value and if they consider low mileage they will add value. Also if the truck is recovered within the next 30 days, they will handle the damage like normal.

It's been 16 years since I handled auto claims but I am sure that it hasn't changed all that much.

My good friend just got new tires and bitched and moaned and faxed them the thereat old receipt and they (Erie) finally gave in and gave her 75% of the tire costs.

In ten years of driving, it was her only claim. Plus she never had a moving violation. It also helped when she did the "I'll go to Geico if you don't cover some of it!" routine.

My wife was tail-ended on her way home from work about a month ago and my insurance ended up totalling it. We had just (as in a week prior) had a new sunroof module put in and after providing them with the receipt, I was credited the full amount.

Granted, this is a different situation and I suppose the logic also figured in that since she wasn't at fault, the money would be recovered from the other driver's insurance anyway.

At 3:00 am this morning the police called to tell me my truck had been located, literally, five blocks away from where it was parked when it was taken. They had it impounded, so I'll get to see what happened to it (hopefully nothing) this weekend.

So far the whole experience had been really easy. The one thing that was making it wasy to deal with, though, is that I have a good insurance policy, including a rental car allowance of $30/day. The $500 comprehensive deductible is a pain, but it doesn't make any sense for me to lower it and pay the higher insurance rate. Plus, since my life and homeowners' insurance is also through Allstate I'm a "preferred customer", which may or may not have mattereed but couldn't have hurt the situation.

The moral of the story (so far): Have good auto coverage, ESPECIALLY have comprehensive and pay out the extra dough for the rental car reimbursement (because I don't think it's THAT much extra).

As an aside to having the Comprehensive, hitting a deer or any other animal is not covered under your Collision - it is considered Comprehensive. So if you live in one of those rural areas with far too many of those long-legged rats, the Comprehensive is something you need.

They couldn't have possibly waited until daybreak to call and tell you? They didn't think they could keep it safe for another 4 or 5 hours?

Actually, Mrs. JJD and I had wondered if the 3:00 am call was really necessary. I finally called the towing place today and had this exchange with the guy who had actually picked up my truck:

Him: Did you have anything in it?
Me: Just a CD player.
Him: No, I mean in the bed of the pickup.
Me: Uh, no.
Him: Well you sure do NOW.

The adjuster had theorized that possibly my truck was taken to use in stealing some property, and it sure seems that was the case. The tow truck driver said when he got there that there were two police cars and the officers were searching the area with dogs, as apparently they had pulled my truck over after running the plate and the driver fled on foot.

The only bummer is I have to go to the impound lot to verify that the stuff in the truck isn't mine, instead of being able to do it over the phone.

Although, you were asking before why it was your truck that was stolen and not the newer and shinier truck sitting right by it? The fact that it was used on a few B&E's would explain it.

If you're a thief, you want the getaway car to be as nondescript and unflashy as possible, so that it's harder to identify by potential witnesses. So most likely that would be why yours was tapped.

And by all means, steal the truck from the same neighbourhood where
a) you're doing the robberies.
b) you live.
c) both.

:-)

By all means, do keep us posted as the story unfolds! I can't wait to hear what the stuff was.

I can't believe no one has asked this yet. But, since you got your truck back and things look fairly good, let me ask:

Is the Creedence still there? And do the cops have any, like, leads?

IT'S A JJD'S STOLEN TRUCK UPDATE...

What a Monday. I worked a ten-hour day Sunday to be able to take Monday off without it messing up my production schedule at work to badly. The guys from Pageantry came to do the last warranty work at 9:00 am, and since Mrs. JJD had to stay home to keep those guys company AND we ran out of milk Sunday night, Izzy Jo and Daddy went to McDonald's for Deluxe Big Breakfasts then brought one home to Mrs. JJD afterward. Good times.

I went to get the truck at about 1:30. NOTE TO W's WHO GET THEIR CAR IMPOUNDED FOR ANY REASON: The tow company might CHARGE YOU STORAGE. I didn't know that was the case and the guy failed to mention it to me when I called to find out about the truck on FRIDAY. I could've gone over there and signed it out Friday and saved myself 90 dollars. (This is the kind of thing I was hoping one of YOU GUYS would warn me about when I started this thread. *sigh*) Plus, they make you pay before you can even see the vehicle, which is perfectly sensible.

I was bummed out to see that my truck was now a filthy, scratched up mess. The interior was DISGUSTING. Plus, the guy smoked in my truck. I hadn't really felt violated by this whole thing until that little discovery. The ignition had been suitably trashed as you'd expect, and the paint on the top edge of the bed was now totally scratched up.

I mostly focused on what was in the cab. In the bed of the truck was a pile of miscellaneous junk...a shop vac, a couple of ladders, a pile of clothes. My CD player was untouched, with my Van Halen "Best of Both Worlds" Disc 1 still in the console. Of course, my Disc 2 was on the floor of my truck, scratched up to all hell. However, my stereo was tuned to the country-music station by the thieving redneck. There were a BUNCH of tools, mostly sockets, on the floor of the driver's side. There were a LOT of gloves, mostly flimsy rubber ones, and a backpack with stuff to wipe items down with, I'd presume. SEVERAL flashlights. A bunch of shitty CDs. And a CELL PHONE, A-HA! Well, not exactly a cell phone...a cigarette lighter with a digital clock that LOOKED like a flip-style cell phone. Classy.

Now, at one point I remembered that my garage door remote was something I wanted to find, and it wasn't on the visor where it goes, of course. So, me and the guy from the tow place start rummaging around to find it. We found so INTERESTING stuff. My license plates were not on the truck, so I was kind of excited when the tow driver found some plates...only they weren't mine. He did find my rear plate, although my registration sticker had been peeled off. (Why?)

Behind the seat was a BIG ol' pair of wire/bolt cutters. They were probably three feet long. I hope they cost the guy a fortune (though somehow I doubt it). More tools of the trade (this guy was DEFINITELY experienced), a couple of sweatshirts, and no garage door remote, BUT we DID find something that makes this entire escapade almost WORTHWHILE...

HIS MOTHERFUCKING DRIVER'S LICENSE!! A-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!~!@!

{ Sorry, you must be logged in to see this text! } COME ON DOWN!

I tried to balance my enthusiasm for the discovery of the license by rationalizing that it was probably someone's license that got stolen, even though it was absolutely in the truck where it would've fallen out of a person's pocket between the crack of the seat. BUT, the cops verified that he's MOST LIKELY the guy and that they took him in yesterday afternoon because he had outstanding warrants and they're charging him for stealing the truck (as far as the cops could say, anyway.) Hope you enjoy your trip back to jail, buddy. The guy lived in the area, too. What a maroon.

Now the tow truck company is going to bring my truck down to the auto place in Kent, and the adjuster is going to check it out tomorrow.

The reason he peeled off your registration sticker is so he could glue it onto his plates. Your plates are worthless to him, they're registered to you. But the sticker is just a sticker that says the registration fee for the year has been paid. You can just put the sticker on an expired plate and it looks like it's in perfect order.

I don't know about Washington, but in Minnesota, the registration sticker is also registered to you, like the plates. There is a serial number on the sticker, which can also be traced to you.
Although, I'm not sure how close the police look at that when they pull someone over.

Same deal in Florida, but at a glance, unless you ran through the registration on account of being stopped for somthing else (i.e. using a stolen vehicle for stealing other property), at a glance it wouldn't be noticeable

Although, there are W's in here who are in law enforcement or formerly in law enforcement...how often on a patrol do you just check a tag number at random? I'm curious.
