Speculation was that Conan would go there if he got the promise of Letterman's slot in the next few years.
5 years isn't that long of a wait, and I'll follow Conan anywhere he goes, but for some reason Conan and NBC sound better to me than Conan and CBS. | Freeway

The question becomes who can CBS drag up? They will almost certainly have to have two people in mind, since Letterman will probably want to retire sooner rather than later as well. | fuelinjected

This is good news for fans of the Cone Zone but take a look at how much Letterman had to tone it down when he moved to 11:35. He used to do tons of crazy bits.

Even unmotivated Dave is a trillion times funnier then Jay "No Original Content" Leno. Leno turned from a bad show to having Hugh Grant on to stealing all his bits from either Letterman or Stern to being a creepy old dude around the female guests and giving the worst puff pieces interviews ever. | Roy.

My "favoritest" theft that Leno ever pulled off was the Iraqui prison soap bit which involved the prisoners tasting the soap and saying it tasted a lot like coconut, which they stole directly from, of all things, an episode of The Larry Sanders Show.
So if you're keeping score at home, that was a host that has become a parody of himself stealing from a show that was a fictional parody of real talk shows to begin with.
But I think they made sure to promise him the spot now so that NBC didn't have a repeat of the whole Leno/Letterman/Carson fiasco from 12 years ago and ended up losing Letterman to CBS because of it.

At least when he rips stuff off from Stern and sanitizes it, Stern is on the radio in the morning. Although, doing the show from Vegas when Stern was in Vegas for his yearly week of shows was pretty bad then just taking bits. And taking stuff from the guy who's on opposite you is just tacky.
Given how much revenue the Tonight Show generates, why can't they hire a writing staff to come up with their own bits? They must have made a conscious decision at some point just to try and compile what everyone else is doing. | Cerebus

| #15 Posted on 27.9.04 1746.51 Reposted on: 27.9.11 1748.12 | See, the thing about Leno is that he's FUNNY. Not on the Tonight Show, but if you ever get the chance, go see him do Stand-Up in Vegas or Atlantic City or something. As much as I don't like him on the Tonight Show, I really found him to be quite funny live on stage, away from censors. I get the feeling that he's always afraid of offending somebody or "taking it too far" on national TV, while he's quite engaging and electric on stage.
Maybe it's me.

Yeah he was decent but it seems like a step down for him. DL Hughley was OK but I don't see him getting it full-time.
Here are the upcoming hosts:
Sept 27-28 - Michael Ian Black (Ed) Sept 29-30 - Ana Gasteyer (SNL)

O'Brien's best asset is his ability to make crappy shows utterly hilarious. When he KNOWS a bit is bombing, he points it out and the audience laughs at it in a roundabout way. | fuelinjected

Somewhere around year 3 or 4, Conan realized that he was never going to get the A-list guests. He was having enough trouble getting B-list guests. So he wisely made the show about himself and not about the guests. He's also good at knowing when a guest is boring the audience and he tries really hard to make the segment interesting.
Probably my favourite Conan moment was when Rebecca Romijn-Stamos kissed him and he flipped out, throwing his chair across the set and celebrating like a madman.
I'm interested in why they announced it now? I guess its a ratings stunt like ONLY FIVE MORE YEARS OF JAY! |
