From PWTorch.com... (pwtorch.com)

There was great concern within WWE when the ratings came in for Raw this week. On the surface it looked good, with a 3.6 rating. But the quarter hour breakdown revealed that the CSI marathon on Spike TV gave Raw a huge head start compared to most weeks and that the rating actually dropped as the show went on. The main segment with Randy Orton vs. Evolution drew a lower rating than the overall average for the show. That told WWE that they blew an opportunity with a lot of new viewers tuning in and that the approach they're taking, including opening with a nine minute "New Style" match between Chris Benoit and Charlie Haas with no storyline support, is not a way to hold the audience.

I won't take the Charlie Haas cheapshot, but...

-The CSI marathon was the week before. As part of its new schedule, Spike is airing two episodes of CSI every week night from 7 to 9PM. The first instance of this was this past Monday. If the opening of Raw got a bump, than that's GOOD, because CSI will be leading in *every* Monday night. The fact that Orton v Evolution drew poorly - does that surprise anybody?

-What does "New Style" mean?

-There wasn't exactly *no* storyline support. Benoit pinned made Rob Conway tap out the week before in the 8 man tag. In case you forgot that, WWE aired a clip of the pin tap out prior to the match. And is it a *bad* idea to put Benoit on first...no matter who his opponent is?

Edit: Oops...Benoit didn't pin Conway.

Well, I guess that to Wade Charlie Haas = Robert Conway, now, but whatever.
The bad thing about the ratings is that CSI DID give them a bump and a good lead in and they couldn't hold the viewers.
I believe that the "New Style" is the slower paces, less spot oriented matches that they've been doing.
And yeah there was storyline support for the match, as if you (he) watched it he would have seen the replay from a week ago and would have heard the commentators put over Benoit and Regal as the #1 Tag Title Contenders. But those sheet writers will never let the facts get in the way of a shot at the WWE!!

Plus, I gotta think that Wade's whole theory is flawed.

People were watching the Benoit-Conway match, according to the ratings. No matter what show led into it, no matter what storyline the match did or didn't have, no matter what style they worked... the ratings were there for that segment.

From that point on, IIRC, JR and The King started to promote some of the other matches for the night, including the main event and the Shawn Michaels Highlight Reel thing. So if the ratings dropoff tells the story (and I still think this whole ratings debate is questionable in a post-Monday Night Wars world), then it could be that more people DIDN'T want to see the rest of the show, then them being turned off by Benoit-Conway.

I mean, let's say, for arguments sake, that the Evolution-Orton match was first up. Let's also assume the Benoit match was the final one. You'd have no one claiming that CSI carried viewers into the opening segment, it would be that interest dropped off after the main event-quality match. The theory can't work both ways....
