I know we did this, Political Compass (politicalcompass.org) a couple of years ago (The W), but I thought it was interesting to see how the authors placed the Presidential candidates in light of the current bitter and vitriolic campaign season. I’m not sure that I agree with all of their placements, particularly Wes Clark, but it is interesting to note how similar Bush and Kerry are in this particular matrix.

For what it’s worth, my scores then (Economic Left/Right: 3.05
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -3.69) and now (Economic Left/Right: 2.99 Authoritarian/Libertarian -3.93) are pretty similar, which I guess means that my political compass has stabilized. Also, I still want someone, anyone, to be a recognizable (sorry, Guru) referent in my quadrant of the matrix.

Tim

How the hell did I end up not posting in that thread the first time around?

To the surprise of no one, I am far left leaning libertarian.

In reading the original thread, I noticed an interesting trend...

Most of the W's that are on what we traditionally interpret as the Left of the political aisle have numbers way in the negative on both scales, while those of us on the traditional Right have plus numbers economically but small positives or negatives on the social scale.

Does that mean that the Right is really the Center, or that we need to totally discount the accuracy & nature of this scale?

Me BTW...

Looks likes I'm pals with Yassir Arafat.

EDIT: I'm very much a capitalist, as long as it don't involve the WTO or NAFTA. Just don't want to be too closely associated with anyone in that country on another thread, calling me a "bloodthirsty killer" or "blind".

I've always wondered about where I stand, myself- I'm neither a registered Dem or Rep, and don't feel like I'm close to either side. Though, I've never sat down and thought about each issue like I had to here:

Economic Left/Right: -2.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.05

Huh. I'm the exact opposite of Dubya. Well, I guess I'd rather be grouped with Gandhi and the Dalai Lama than Hitler and Stalin.

At least I'm close to Friedman on the economic scale (as I would have expected), though I really thought I was more libertarian than it appears I am.

Two years ago:
Economic Left/Right: -4.88
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -5.08

Today:
Economic Left/Right: -4.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.10

Slowly moving towards the center I guess. So really, how the hell do you end up in the positive section on the economic scale? Do you truly believe that what is best for the most successful corporations is best for us?

Of course, there were several questions that are just too loaded, such as "The freer the market, the freer the people." As a straight up equation I would put agree for that, but if you're talking about what that statement supposedly implies (freer markets are always better!) then I'd have to hit disagree.

Makes my head hurt.

Anaylsis:
They changed the Lib/Auth axis; so negatives last time are positives this time (it used to be Auth/Lib). So don't get confused if it looks like you changed sides.
I moved more towards the center, economically. (But, as has been pointed-out, there were some pretty loaded questions.) I moved even further towards authoritarianism. I can't help but wonder if my thinking has swung more that way with the upcoming election. Perhaps I've been thinking about these issues more, or perhaps I'm just being reactionary to what's been happening.
Since I'm more moderate than the Pope(who is the closest to me), I guess I'm doing all right.
