The New York Yankees asked the commissioner's office to award them a forfeit over Tampa Bay after the Devil Rays failed to arrive in time yesterday because of travel problems due to Hurricane Frances. It was a request that had no chance of being granted.
Originally scheduled as a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., the start time was pushed back two hours on Sunday. Because of the delay, the commissioner's office told the teams to play one game at 7 p.m. and said it would decide later on when to reschedule the second game.
The Devil Rays arrived at 6:05 p.m., and the Yankees won, 7-4, in the one game that was played. Commissioner Bud Selig said he had no intention of ordering a forfeit.
"Given the stage of the season we are in, and the exciting pennant races, it is critical that we do everything to decide the championship on the field," he said in a statement.
The Yankees again proving how classy of an organization they are. In the midst of a hurricane, and in the midst of a pennant race. how can they possibly say that they should be awarded a forfeit? Is it kosher according to the rules of MLB? Probably. But are the Yankees so screwed that they are this desperate for win?

Maybe its best to focus your frustation on Selig. MLB told TB that they would have to forfeit both games if they didn't get there by 3pm, 2 hours later than the original start time, and they didn't get there. Isn't then MLB a bunch of heartless bastards for throwing the punishment out there?
NY DAILY NEWS:
"Yankees president Randy Levine implored Major League Baseball to grant the Yankees a forfeit victory for the Devil Rays' failure to arrive in time for the start of their scheduled doubleheader yesterday at the Stadium."
It is difficult to feel good about the Yanks "imploring" MLB to hand them a win, but if MLB is gonna throw down the gauntlet in the first place, they should follow through if necessary. It does stand to reason that if the Yanks need a win at the end of the season, and can't get it together to put up a win against Tampa, they shouldn't be in the playoffs period. They are in their rights to request a forfeit. That said (or typed), they had a doubleheader scheduled for a gorgeous Labor Day, and people ended up waiting all day for a game. If the situation was reversed, this thread would be something like, "Commish in Yanks' pocket. Burn in hell George!". | Von Maestro

As John Kruk pointed out last night on Baseball Tonight... If the Yankees weren't having the pitching problems they were having, do you think they would try to get a forfeit from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays??
This just reeks of desperation on the Yankees part & I hope they go through with their rumored boycott of the make-up double-header.

George himself is from Tampa, and he's usually a charitable guy. Can't muster up a few kind words for the hapless Rays?
Not to mention that, from a baseball perspective, demanding a forfeit from Tampa Bay is quite possibly the lowest of the low. | dunkndollaz

In the past 10 days, the Yankees have had Mussina bitch about how his anal-retentive routine was destroyed by the Blue Jays honoring an announcer with a brain tumor, Brown playing off the wall with his hand, and Randy Levine proving he is a nitwit yet again. At least people won't be able to break out the 'You really can't hate the Yankees because they are so classy' line that has been spouted the past few years.
Now, putting Levine aside for the moment, I actually would have had no problem with the Yankees getting 1 of the games of the doubleheader as a forfeit win, if it is demonstrated that the owner of the Devil Rays was too cheap to pay for hotel rooms for a few days in New York in order to get the team out of town. | BigSteve

Come on, friends. George Steinbrenner may believe that the goal in life is to go 162-0 and sweep the World Series by a score of 57-1. But he isn't that inhumane.

He does have a point. However, here's another opinion on the matter from WFAN's Mike Francesca (got the quote from the Boston Dirt Dog's site):

Reposted on: 9.9.11 2142.37 | The point the Yankees were trying to make was that last year they were told they could not leave Baltimore early to avoid Hurricane Isabella, when it was pretty clear they wouldn't be able to get the game in, but MLB made them wait it out in Baltimore instead of leaving when it was safer. MLB even threatened them that they would have to forfeit the game if they weren't there as scheduled. How soon everyone forgets.
I don't think it was right of MLB last year, but I don't think it was right of the Yanks this year, either.
