This documentary, Speedo, is running this week on PBS as part of their P.O.V. series.

It's a very entertaining look at the world of demolition derbys. Filmed during 1998-2000, it focuses on this 40 year old mechanic from Long Island who goes by the nickname "Speedo". He's quite demented in that his entire life revolves around the NY/NJ demo derby scene and his thought that it will springboard him into NASCAR. He's got a horrible temper and absolutely no patience. His wife works two jobs to pay for the food, clothes and bills while all of Speedo's earnings from his work at the Exxon station go toward financing his racing. His family situation is a disaster and Speedo seems completely oblivious to reality.

He takes his car down to Florida to compete in the Demo Derby World Championships and what better way to open an event of this magnitude than with indy fed tag action. They set the ring up out on the dirt and I almost couldn't believe it as Jamie Noble and Tony Mamaluke were bumping all over the place.

It's strange, but I enjoyed it.

A month ago, I took in a demolition derby...and I never thought it was going to be enjoyable, but it was something very different. This wasn't a "professional" derby, per was just a group of locals from the area just ramming gutted out into each other. It was all for a good cause; a local charity made over $1000 from admission alone.

I'd be interested in catching the SPEEDO video. Wonder if PBS is offering it for sale.
