I just watched the video from last night, which is available here.

Money quote: I wish we lived in the day that I could challenge you to a duel.

It is sad that Matthews is taken so seriously when he is such a shill for the Democratic Party. He was a Democratic staffer, so that is not a surprise. But if I were Matthews, I'd be pretty embarassed the way Miller made him his bitch.

The Media and the Kerry folks are in full panic mode.

I say it is about time we bring back dueling. The threat of a duel challenge being issued would jump the ratings for C-Span and C-Span 2 at least 300% during contentious debates.

I watched his speech to the convention and I don't know if it helped or hurt their cause. I expected his head to explode any minute. I guess it's better to have the most vitriolic speaker not be from your party, but I think he may have turned off all but the faithful.

Let me get this straight - you think that went well for Zell Miller? Whatever, man. Faced with evidence of his own flagrant hypocracy, he starts screaming and yelling and then threatens to kill a TV news reporter.

I agree with Dick Cheney - I'm glad he's on your side.

Given Chris Matthews flair for putting words in peoples mouths, abusing Michelle Malkin last week, and generally making shit up and allegedlly attributing it to people, I'm actually rather glad Miller gave him the whatfor. Hell, most of the people watching Hardball probably loved it because people realize what a pompous ass Matthews is.

There is a reason that Darrel Hammond playing Matthews on SNL is so funny...

Why in the Hell is Miller a Democrat. You don't have to march in goose step with your party, but wow, with his level of hatred just switch parties.

Did you actually watch the segment? My mother had it own, and Miller looked awful. Matthews was pushing him to defend several statements he made, and he simply lost it. Matthews and his panel (or somebody; they were off camera at the time) started laughing at him. That's never a sign that things are going your way.

That's what the right seems to have turned into, though. If you make wild threats that you honestly can't back up or call somebody names, you win the argument.

Zell wanted to challenge Matthews to a DUEL! That was awesome.

Zell was the one refusing to answer questions head-on, and contradicted himself many times. He claimed "I'm not the one that refused to feed hungry kids," then goes on to make claims Kerry never claimed. He starts listing off a bunch of voting records out of context, and didn't answer Matthews important question about whether or not those items have helped us.

Miller rags on Kerry for cutting funding to the B-2 bomber when President Bush Sr. himself announced in the 1992 State of the Union that they wouldn't make any more B-2 bombers or MX missiles.

After completing 20 planes for which we have begun procurement, we will shut down further production of the B - 2 bombers.

The fact is, they aren't talking about what Kerry has voted FOR. Since 1997, Kerry has regularly voted for virtually every DoD appropriations bill.

Any time a candidate for office is a senator, their record is usually the first thing the opposition goes for, which makes sense, and it's disappointed me that the Kerry campaign hasn't gone after Bush/Cheney's record as President. Kerry is definitely in danger of losing this election if he doesn't fight back.

NBC had John McCain come on right after Zell's speech, and he added some much-needed levity to those watching. He basically said that there was no educational value to the public whatsoever in Zell's speech, and that the issues are being swept under the rug for partisan politics. Both Kerry and Bush ARE qualified to be President, but we're wasting so much time talking about how they're NOT qualified. So, esentially, we're supposed to play Russian Roulette on election day.

We haven't seen the last of Zell Miller. He's going to show up on Hardball down the road wearing Confederate army wear with two guns.

Yes I did watch the segment. I thought it was hilarious how Matthews wouldn't actually let him answer the question without trying to interject more Democratic spin another question.

Wasn't that called the Democratic Convention?

I guess it would be convenient in making that assertion to skip over the part where he voted AGAINST funding the war in Iraq right?

Except that doing so would mean Kerry's Senate record would also become a focus. Given that his senate record is as accomplished as Bruce Willis' solo album, that probably wouldn't be prudent for him.

Totally agree. I think it is Hammond's best role. I crack up when Hammond tells the person how he is going to talk louder and over them. Always great.

Man, I wish I had seen this, I hate Chris Matthews with a passion (I think him, Tim Russert and Matt Lauer should all start their own pompous ass show where they could all brag who is the best).

Odd mixing up of quotes above. It happened to be one of the few times Grimis says something that I do agree with, though, so, as Mark Henry would say, it's all gravy.

Miller is a Democrat. He's been sent as an undercover agent by the DNC to destroy the Republican party from within. That's the only explanation for his one-two convention/Hardball post. Hillary probably has something to do with it.

I'm rubbing my eyes and staring at my monitor intently, trying to believe what I'm seeing, that anyone could interpret it that way.

Miller had a _complete meltdown_ on Hardball. His speech was ridiculous enough, Saletan's shredding of it being my favorite so far, but his conduct with Matthews was a solid 95 on the Unintentional Comedy Scale. Even Alan Keyes hasn't gone that far off the map to date.

Although I think had he smacked Matthews across the face with a leather glove and pronounced it "DOOO-EL" it would have been at least a 97.

And if the duel played out akin to the 1783 duel in "Highlander" it would be the greatest moment in tv history.

As for Angry Alan...he was in peak form yesterday (suntimes.com)

Building up to his trademark high-decibel fever pitch, Keyes shouted, "We shall deal with the challenge that is being mounted today to the family structure throughout our country: Gay marriage activists who are demanding that we should take marriage off the foundation of procreation, child rearing, responsibility to the future, that is the true heart of marriage and place it on a basis of selfishness, pleasure-seeking and self-fulfillment."

Some delegates clapped enthusiastically. Other rolled their eyes and clapped silently. Topinka stayed in another room during his speech.

After his eight-minute speech, Keyes was asked if heterosexual couples who don't or can't have children are hedonists.

"The heterosexual relationship is haunted by the possibility of the child, which means you have to commit yourself somewhere to your head to the possibility of a lifelong commitment that involves not only selfish pleasure but sometimes sacrifice."

Agreed Doc.

Of all the major network guys, Russert is the only one I can't tell for sure where his political ideologies reside... and that is a good thing.

Zell Miller on John Kerry in 2001: "My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders and a good friend."

I don't want to use the term flip-flop or anything...

The best comment on the Zell Miller speach so far has come from John McCain on the Daily Show:
