What's the over/under on "number of second tier wrestling newz sites that speculate about Brock going back to the WWE" within the next 24 hours?

I'll start the bidding at about 20.

I will take the over and put the over/under speculation on Brock at Smackdown tapings at 12.

My guess is that he's already "backstage at RAW; will be introduced as the 4th member of Evolution" ...

FWIW, I'm not sure anybody paying any close attention to this is surprised. The real questions remain: Will Minnesota offer him a spot on the practice squad? And if so, will he accept?

For him to step out of the ring and onto the active roster was just not realistic. Pretty much everyone has said he's a project. Projects land on the practice roster.

While I'd love to have Brock back, I think he's committed to the football thing. If the Vikes offer, I would be shocked if he turned down a spot on the practice squad. He's just so down on wrestling that I can't see him coming back right away.

Lesnar's fantasy camp with Vikings comes to an end
Monday August 30, 2004
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Brock Lesnar won't be the next big thing in the NFL at least not this year.

Lesnar, the former pro wrestling star who hadn't played football in nine years, was cut by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.

Lesnar developed faster than expected and impressed his teammates with hard work. But his lack of football experience combined with minimal playing time and a painful groin injury from an April motorcycle accident were too much to overcome in just one month of training camp.

``He gave me a hug,'' coach Mike Tice said. ``He was very happy for the chance.''

Lesnar, 27, won the 2000 NCAA heavyweight championship at the University of Minnesota, and gained pro wrestling fame as 'The Next Big Thing'.

But he walked away from a seven-year, $45 million WWE contract in March to pursue a professional football career. On the eve of training camp, Lesnar signed a one-year contract with the Vikings for $230,000, the rookie minimum.

``When he called me, that's all he asked for, is an opportunity,'' Tice said. ``I think we gave him a good opportunity to see if this is what he wanted to do.''

Tice declined to speculate about whether Lesnar would be added to the Vikings' practice squad, but said the club would be ``proud'' to allocate him to the NFL's developmental league next spring.

``I suggest to him that he should at some point end up in NFL Europe this year and play,'' Tice said. ``Hopefully, that will be as a Viking.''

Lesnar wasn't available at camp to comment. His agent, Ed Hitchcock, said Lesnar wants to continue his development on the practice squad and in NFL Europe.

``He's committed to this long-term,'' Hitchcock said. ``He's realistic about what it takes to develop. There are players who've played this game all their lives who take a couple of years to develop (in the NFL).''
------------------------------------------------------

I really would be surprised if he doesn't go to NFL Europe next spring, cuz everything I've read about him points towards he wanting to persue this.

Are we including the '**ADVERTISEMENTS**' in that? If so I take the over on that without a second thought. And I give it a week before him, Goldberg and Austin are reforming the nWo TONITE!!

Wasn't this the same Brock who just a few short months ago was proclaiming himself too good for practise squads or NFL Europe and saying he was in it for the big time or nothing?

Sounds like he might have had something of a reality check since then....

I don't think it makes sense for the Vikings to put him on the practice squad. If he wasn't good enough to make it past the 65 cutdown, why bring him back over the guys cut between 65 and 53? Also, its not like Brock is 22 and has all the potential in the world. A 27 year old doesn't have as much long term upside to waste one of the spots on.

I thought that was when he was still kind of "cutting promos" when discussing his NFL goals. Once they got to camp he was very humble about the whole thing, by most accounts.

True, but if he can be the 5th DT in a four-man rotation AND play special teams at 290 lbs., he'll have ONE asset that could keep him in the league for at least a couple of years in the salary-cap era: He'll be cheap.

True, I just never got why he did that. Its not like there's anything to be gained by garnering 'heel heat' in the NFL. At least not when you're still looking for someone to take a chance on you.

I'm not sure if he ever genuinely believed he would be able to back up his words. Maybe it was just his wrestling background had lead to him forgetting to be a bit more moderated in his interviews. I mean the guy made young Deoin seem positively bashful.

Since you have to be released prior to being named to the practice squad, this could be a move to deflect attention from him. If they want him on the practice squad, and keep him around until the final cut, maybe another team is more likely to sign him to the active roster and just hold him there. By being released "early", he may get lost in the shuffle of next week's cuts.

Don't forget- teams are allowed to hold three more practice squad spots than last year (8 as opposed to 5), so that gives Lesnar somewhat of a better chance to stick on a taxi squad.

Speaking of cutting players ... for you Pack fans that have access to local media, are there any rumblings about Tim Couch getting cut? ... A guy that I work with here in Nashville is a huge Packers fan (he's from Green Bay) and he seems to think there may be a chance that Couch could be released after Friday's game with Tennessee.

Well, he ain't doing much in camp. (WBAY-TV...my employer)

The buzz here in Titletown, USA is that with McBrien coming on strong (kids even wearing his redshirt jersey!?), Couch needs a strong outing (Green Bay Press-Gazette) vs. Tennessee on Friday to stick around. It's gonna be a close race to see who the #3 QB's gonna be. (Green Bay News-Chronicle...recently bought by Gannett, who owns the Press-Gazette)

My take: cut the schmuck NOW. Hell, I'm thinking of buying a tiny little couch and stick it on a sign saying "Hey Cleveland: We Want a Refund", and bringing it to Jim Rome's upcoming tour stop in Cleveland.

He hasn't shown anything, threw less than a handful of passes in practice yesterday (due to his sore arm), and is obviously beaten out by Doug Pederson for the number 2 slot. There's no way that he stays around with his cap number as the number 3 guy. The local rumor mill has said as much. Of course, if Sherman really thinks he could be a long term answer after Favre is gone, who knows?

What's next for Brock? Maybe the CFL! (canada.com) but I doubt it.

Two CFL sources requesting anonymity said Wednesday the Bombers have placed the six-foot-three, 295-pound Lesnar on their negotiation list. The former World Wresting Entertainment star was released Monday by the Minnesota Vikings, failing to make the NFL club as a defensive lineman

Lesnar would earn much less in the CFL, whose average is about $50,000 with the rookie minimum being around $30,000. But with teams already halfway through their seasons, Lesnar would earn between $15,000 and $25,000.

If Lesnar was placed on a CFL practice roster, he would receive roughly $500 per week.

Taman said he'll know in a week or two - once the Vikings finalize their practice roster - whether he has a legitimate shot at landing Lesnar.

-----------

Winnipeg is kinda close to Minnesota, or he could just stay at Jericho old place and be announced as "currently renting a place in Winnipeg"... Plus Sable would fit in so nicely in The Peg. Naa I don't see him accepting

As of last night, the Bombers' GM said that he's been talking to Lesnar and that Lesnar is now considering accepting the Bombers' offer.

He could always join (and play in) the CFL for the remainder of its season and then go to the Vikings' practice squad if they want him at all.

That makes the most sense. At least the guy would be learning in a pro camp as opposed to right now, where he's not. Most likely he waits another week or so, sees what the Vikes are gonna offer him, then decides. A few weeks in CFL camp also wouldn't hurt his ability to play in NFL Europe, since there'd be a couple months in between the two. The stupidest thing to do for Brock right now would be to sit out and not practice somewhere.
