It's a nice gimmick. I'll buy it, but it's also because I like Iron City beer. Plus, a few of my buddies' dads work for Alcoa, and things haven't exactly been going great for them lately. They're excited, if only because they see this as a little bit of job security.

Plus, I can now say that I'm getting drunk so my roommate's dad keeps his job!

It is a little odd, at first, but not bad. I have had a bottle of soda, and I have a bottle of vokda right now - both aluminum. I actually kind of like it better than the plastic - soda never tastes right to me out of that kind of bottle.

I kind of hope this trend picks up some steam...

Soda only tastes right from a GLASS bottle, but good luck finding THEM without paying a huge premium (and having to make a special trip).

Amen to that, both the taste and the absurd premium. All the stores around here carry the little 6-packs of 8-oz. Coke bottles, and it's like $3.79 for them. Of course, once in a while you just succumb because there is nothing better than cold Coca-Cola from a glass bottle.

You serious? Glass bottles are cheap as chips over here. They practically give the things away. A 750ml bottle only sets you back about 70p AND you get 20p back if you take the bottle back. You can even save up many, many bottles and use them as currency to pay the (admittedly pissed off) pizza delivery man when money is tight. I think it was our countries sole contribution toward recycling or something.

Granted the choice is limited in glass bottles, but you can get Irn Bru, Orangina and Cola (Red or Black!) so most bases are covered.

The 10 deposit 16oz returnables disappeared from California right around 15 years ago, and the short, squatty glass bottles were replaced by plastic about five years later, sadly. It's all plastic pretty much now...but non-returnable glass (usually 6-12oz bottles) are making a comeback as a "gourmet" item in specialty shoppes.

I can't see beer losing glass bottles, though. There is a marked difference in taste to enough drinkers that it'd be real tough.

Irn Bru freakin' rules, man. We've got to get that in the 'States.

As for canned beer, yeah. Not the same, IMO.

On the news here the other day they did say that AB was going to start shipping some of the higher end beers (probably world select and stuff like that) in aluminum bottles by the end of the year. From the report they say it keeps the beer colder for a longer time out of refrigeration, not to mention they are a lot safer since there is a low chance of stepping on broken aluminum if someone drops one of these.

Oh, I agree completely there - I was quite excited when I found the local Beverages and More selling Dr. Pepper in glass bottles. Sure they were like $1.20 a pop (no discount based on amount), but they sure taste better than anything out of a can or a plastic bottle...

This will take away the most important useage of a glass beer bottle... Break it over on the side of a bar in case trouble happens to keep the thugs away!

Now all you need to do with aluminum is twist it and rip it and you have an instant neck cutter. More effective than a jagged scar under the eye socket but not as effective as a thug stopper. The faces you pull as you rip into the aluminum dont make for tough guy awards.
