Well, that was the running joke for the first 7-8 seasons. In fact, they even mentioned this in the 'Homer becomes friends with Flanders' episode.

Lisa: Don't worry, Bart. It seems as if every week something unusual happens to the Simpsons and in the end, everything goes back to normal. My advice is to sit back, make a few wisecracks, and enjoy the ride.

Bart: Aye carumba!

Lisa: That's the spirit!

Look at some of the long-term changes they've made over the last few years, however. Maude died, Apu got married and had octuplets, Skinner and Krabappel hooked up, Barney quit drinking (though it looks like he's off the wagon now), Lisa became a vegan and a Buddhist and Milhouse's parents got divorced.

To nit-pick: Milhouse's parents got divorced in '96, and Skinner and Krabbapel hooked up in '97, so I guess it all depends on what your definition of "last few years" is.

EDIT: Oh, and the one that REALLY gets me: The Simpsons bringing back Marvin Monroe this year after he'd been DEAD for about a decade. Long illness, my butt.

Also, I remember Barney explaining that he's on and off the wagon at will; which explains his presence at Moe's.

I'm not saying that the show doesn't tend towards the "30 minutes of weirdness/stupidity and everything is back to normal" usually, I'm just saying that for them to make a major change isn't unprecedented. They've kept Maude Flanders dead, and if they are making a big deal about a character coming out of the closet, then I would think this is something that will stick, unlike the quirkier things they tend to ignore.

Oh yeah, there is a precedent....I'm just saying, I won't be surprised if it doesn't last.

BWT- Maggie Roswell leaving the show was the reason Maude was killed off. In fact, she left earlier, and they had another lady do Maude's voice for a season or two before they killed her off, I believe.

Just to note, it seems Maggie Roswell left the show because of money, but she has since rejoined the show. Credit IMDb.com:

"Left "Simpsons, The" (1989) cast in spring 1999 after the show's tenth season when 20th Century Fox refused her requested raise increase from the $2000 she earned the past three seasons until her departure. Before her departure, Roswell had been flying into LA from her Denver home on her own money to record her lines."

and

"Rejoined The Simpsons, after a three-year absence due to a salary dispute. [2002]

I doubt it'll be anything to do with Smithers. As far as I remember, his voice actor killed himself two years ago, which is why they've downplayed a lot of the stuff he's been involved in recently, much less a big storyline such as him coming out.

No, according to IMDB, Smithers is voiced by Harry Shearer, also known as the voices of Burns, Flanders, Lovejoy, Skinner, and Hibbert, among others. He is also very much alive.

Maybe not then. I heard it on a radio blurb a few years ago. My mistake!

Patty "coming out of the closet" isn't really that much of a revelation. She might not have come out and said it, but I pretty much thought it's been implied for quite a while. In fact, I distinctly remember "there goes the last vestiges of Hetrosexuality" being a Patty quote from a while ago.

Groundskeeper Willie was seen frequenting upkilts.com in the Mr. X episode, clearly a heterosexual porn site.

I'd imagine you're thinking of Phil Hartman, voice of Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, who was shot dead by his wife a few years ago. Smithers is alive and well in Harry Shearer's larynx.

Man, that didn't come out right.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of. Thanks.

*Phew!

As for who's gay, I'm pointing at Moe for the moment. They just seem to be going nowhere with him and turning gay would be the perfect way to revamp his character.

Of course, it would've been the perfect way five years ago, but now it'll probably just come off as flat and forced. Ah well, win some, lose some.

Moe has tried to get with Marge in the past. I'm not sure I'd buy him as the one.

I'm thinking - Duffman?

True, and he did have a girlfriend in one episode as well, that's why I'm thinking him being gay would be genius (in concept, if not in practise). He's no luck with the women, but he's hot shit with the guys.

When I heard this story on the radio, Moe is the first one I thought of as well. Even though he and Homer along with Barney tried to "Straighten up" Bart by going hunting.

Patty seems like an easy way to go. Patty & Selma haven't been interesting in ages. They really are two of my least favorite characters on the show.
