Fans of hit cartoon The Simpsons are poised for big news - one of the show's long-time characters is set to reveal he's gay. At the moment, many fans are betting the character in question will be Waylon Smithers - who works for evil nuclear tycoon Mr. Burns - but the show's producers are refusing to confirm or deny who it is. Producer Al Jean says, "We have a show where, to raise money, Springfield legalizes gay marriage. Homer becomes a minister by going on the internet and filling out a form. A longtime character comes out of the closet, but I'm not saying who." Show creator Matt Groening jokes, "It's Homer!"

Can't say I am too shocked. But I don't think it will be Smithers. Right now I am leading toward Patty, Selma, or Martin Prince. And maybe Mr. Burns. Maybe Burns will go gay and run to Smithers and finally say "I love you" only to have Smithers look shocked and go "What? But I am not gay!" Just to add some shock to it.

I heard rumors a few months ago that they were going to do a gay marriage episode this season with Patty.

Well Lenny certainly has an unhealthy fixation on Carl. I am not sure if Carl feels the same way.

Chief Wiggum...if only for the "I have two daddies" lines Ralph might come up with.

Potential comedy GOLD.

Smart money is on Patty, since they haven't done a Patty & Selma storyline in ages, plus their characters are both about as stale as the DMV cigarette smoke.

Wild "wouldn't it be wacky if" guesses....

I'll take Principal Skinner as a dark horse. What's Mrs. Crabapple if not cover?

Besides, he's way too OCD-ish and was breast-fed up until the age of 40.

It's already been somewhat outed that it's going to be Patty Bouvier. She hooks up with a golf pro. Homer also becomes an ordained minister.

SNPP.com (the source for all news Simpson) is saying it's Patty. And I agree. Though I don't know if it'll last, since the Simpsons seem to be a lot of "something wacky happens, but everything returns to normal in the end" lately.

- The "real Seymour Skinner" ends up taken away on a train, is promptly ignored afterwards.

- The various cats who all meet a tragic end, only for a cat that closely resembles Snowball II earns the name and all is promptly ignored afterwards.

Need I go on?

One of the few. As Tod pointed out, there are plenty of the opposite.

Matter of fact, I'm still impressed they've stuck by the Dead Maude angle so far. Christian theme park notwithstanding.

Well wasn't the reason for her being killed off in the show because the voice actress no longer wanted to do the part?

I'm not saying that the show doesn't tend towards the "30 minutes of weirdness/stupidity and everything is back to normal" usually, I'm just saying that for them to make a major change isn't unprecedented. They've kept Maude Flanders dead, and if they are making a big deal about a character coming out of the closet, then I would think this is something that will stick, unlike the quirkier things they tend to ignore.

Oh yeah, there is a precedent....I'm just saying, I won't be surprised if it doesn't last.

BWT- Maggie Roswell leaving the show was the reason Maude was killed off. In fact, she left earlier, and they had another lady do Maude's voice for a season or two before they killed her off, I believe.
