I don't think this is a hoax, (although some of the pictures are rather grainy.)

Apparently, some people in Maryland have spotted a new animal (nbc10.com). They are calling it the hyote, since it looks like a cross between a hyena and coyote.

Either we need to explore our own continent better, or some of those sci-fi horror B-movies may be coming true...

I couldn't really tell from the pic,but if it's real,it almost looks like either a Red River Hog or a hybrid wild boar/domestic pig. I can tell you coyotes and Hyenas definately cannot hybridize.Coyotes are canines (dogs) and Hyenas are viverids (realatives of the mongoose.) At best I would say possibly a coyote-red setter hybrid (unlikely but remotely possible.) If this story itself is at all real, I would think local wildlife biologists would be attempting to trap it and find out what it really is.

We have a lot of "coydogs" in central Illinois, so why not...

Personally, I think it has kind of a horse/pig feel to it. The head and mane of a horse, with the stout body of a pig.

Calls to mind Episode 814 of MST3K.

It only looks like it has the snout of a pig in the first picture. If you look at some of the other pictures (nbc10.com) in the article, it looks more like a dog-type thing and less like a pig. At least, that's what I think.

Incidentally, a local vet has identified it as a dog with mange. But that's only from the video feed. Nobody has tracked it down yet...

Looking at the rest of the pictures (thanks, Eddie) it's hind half looks almost shaven. Perhaps some sort of cruel prank?

Edit: Or, mange. Duh. Thanks Grimis.
