| #1 Posted on 15.7.04 1909.10 Reposted on: 15.7.11 1909.12 | Phoenix' ABC affiliate led off the 5:00 news tonight with a story about the possible trade of Randy Johnson. There have been rumours floating around, particularly since the Brenley firing, but the rumours seem to be escalating. They're mostly talking about a 3-way trade. Randy's starting tonight (I have the tickets for *tomorrow* night -- grrr.) KNXV's opening comment was speculation whether this will be Randy's last start as a Diamondback.
Anybody want to buy out some D'Backs season tickets? $38 a seat seems a bit excessive just to watch the Tucson Sidewinders. | Promote this thread! | | Guru Zim

I heard the Padres were trying for him at one point. Is that still an option?\

Most of the talk I'd heard about Boston getting Randy mentioned that a possible hang-up would be that he and Schilling kinda don't get along. Where'd that come from? I never heard of any dissention between the two. | emma

I never did either. They're not at all the same personality types, they're not going to be best buddies outside of work, but they both really want to be winners. If anything, they're good for each other in that regard. No, I don't remember ever hearing anything of the sort. | Whitebacon

I don't either, at least until this season. I think most of what I've read though has been through the New York media, so take that for what you will.
I've also heard that the Cubs will trade for Orlando Cabrera from the Expos, move him to Boston with a prospect or two for Nomar, and then the Sawx move the prospects to Arizona to get Unit, but again, that is just rumor.
As a Cub fan, I would be happy with getting Cabrera. I think he's a little stronger defensively than noMAH, he makes a better top-of-the-order hitter, and is probably more signable. Not that I would complain about getting Nomar, of course. | Grimis

Seriously. Is it actually rewarding to play for the Yankees? The team is already stacked. Might as well buy a Series ring on ebay. Is Anaheim not enough of a contender? Boston? He'll only accept a trade to the two teams with the best records in baseball? Just doesn't sound very competitive to me. I don't claim to understand what goes on in Johnson's mind, or that of any other athlete, but where is the reward in this? It's like encountering a bully beating up a kid on the playground, and rushing to the bully's aid. Way to go, Randy. | JayJayDean

Well, he IS the same guy who went 9-10 for Seattle, got traded then MAGICALLY strung together a 10-1 run for the Astros. Of course, he went 0-2 in the NLDS. (Thank you, Kevin Brown!)

| #14 Posted on 16.7.04 1527.29 Reposted on: 16.7.11 1528.22 | As much as I'd like to be annoyed with Randy, I really can't. He's Randy f'n Johnson, has 5 Cy Young awards, & just one World Series. The guy's 40 -- he doesn't necessarily have a few seasons left to participate in somebody else's building process. (Colangelo convinced him that *we* were the team to do that with. Which was good for exactly one great season out of 6.) He's certainly put in his time with losing teams -- you can't begrudge him that. And he really is too damn good to be sitting on the sofa, watching baseball on TV in October.
He's gamely hung in with us til now. But it's got to be frustrating as hell to go out & be killer good, & have the rest of the team constantly let you down all over the place.
Top that off with firing Brenley & putting in a AAA coach in his place, has to be the last straw. (One of Pedrique's first several games, Randy was pitching. Randy was brilliant, pitching a complete game. The rest of the team hadn't screwed up too badly, we had a good lead & were going to win. Ninth inning, 2 outs, nobody on, pop fly gets dropped. Pedrique walks out to the mound to talk to Randy. We were all waiting for Randy to punch Pedrique. What the hell was he Pedrique thinking?!!?!?!)
Anyway, I can see where Randy's coming from. | Rudoublesedoublel

As a Cardinal fan, I like the sound of half of that. ESPN's pundits have been saying that the Yankees simply don't have the necessary prospects to make the deal with Arizona. The Cardinal fan in me also wonders if Mark Prior's status with the Cubs could cause them to become a player in the Johnson sweepstakes. | chill

If half of their players were on other teams, they'd be on the rumor mill too, and I'm sure Cashman knows how to work a deal to get another marquee player. I see the Yankees trading some offense away to a third team, that third team trading prospects/whatever to the D'backs, and Arizona trading Johnson to NYY. Why can't that happen? | emma

I ran this question past my pal at the game last night. (Might as well chat about Randy rumours -- not much to see in the game.) Her input: Mrs. Johnson & Mrs. Schilling are reported to be notably good friends -- that they indeed used to socialize & all. And that there were reports that they were sitting together at the All Star Game, chatting convivially. I'd chalk that up in the pro-Boston rumour column. :-)
(Meanwhile, we played the "How many of our starters have played in the majors for at least 2 years?" game. Last night's result: 3. Gonzalez, Finley & Hillenbrand. Woo-hoo.) | Keeper

To add to this slightly, there was a picture in the Boston Herald on Tuesday, with Curt sitting on the field watching the homerun derbey with his kids, and also one of Randy Johnson's sons*.
I doubt he is coming to Boston anyway, but from everything I have heard, the families get along well.

Apparently his agent and the owner of the D'backs are now saying nobody on either side has ever talked about a trade and that Randy's staying with the D'backs. Pffft. Chalk THAT up to the typical b-s that people tell the media when a deal is being worked on and they don't want any media to find out and leak details. This almost always is the case when coaches are given a "vote of confidence." |
