We have free speech - both Whoopi and the people who use the slim-fast product. Neither will go to prison, but Whoopi will have to pay for her choice in insulting the President because the company that employs her received complaints from their users.
That is how capitalism works, folks. Now, if we were in the dictatorship that some on this board suggest we are in, Whoopi would be in jail or worse. She only has to tell funny jokes or act again. But I am sure she'll make plenty of day-pay at the union rate from likeminded talkshow hosts and others during her unemployment. Maybe Senator Kerry will use her in his ads.

BTW, how funny would it be if the two people and thier pets were arrested again for violating health codes by keeping thier pets in hotels? THAT would rule!

They were in a public place where the President was making an appearance, wearing shirts that said "Love America, Hate Bush". They weren't "protesting", they were standing on the Capitol steps like all the people with pro-Bush shirts. There were no blatantly unconstitutional "free speech zones" being enforced, but somehow those two still got arrested. Apparently they just didn't meet the dress code.
It was a blatant violation of people's civil rights when this garbage was happening months ago, and it still is. | StaggerLee

Like I said, thier rights to Assemble PEACEFULLY and thier right to free speech do not say that they have the right to become a disturbance (as the singing, probably very loudly would indicate) and does not reserve thier right to an audience with thier target of protest.

Now, I don't always agree with the so-called free speech zones, but they are currently the law. It seems like the couple was given a chance toleave (in the same way that a disruptive patron at a theatre might be asked to leave) and didn't. And just like the patron at the theatre who is asked to leave and doesn't and could be charged with tresspassing, these two were.
As I said, I don't neccesarily agree with free speech zones, but I understand the need for safety and security that the police need to maintain. I note that I don't see anything associated with the Feds - just the local cops. | DrDirt

Goldberg, and other comedians, have been doing bits about politicians for years now. And some of them are distasteful. There is nothing unusual about this.
And I know, the argument will be, "But she said it at a political function." Yep, a very partisan political function for the opposing party. So she wasn't so tongue-in-cheek-PC as most people are at these things. Was she really saying anything all that different? I don't think so.
Personally, I think Bush joking about not being able to find the WMDs at a political function while Americans died in Iraq was MUCH more distasteful and out of place. | Nate The Snake

Originally posted by AWArulz Now, I don't always agree with the so-called free speech zones, but they are currently the law.
The only problem with that is they're blatantly unconstitutional and always have been. And, of course, segregating protesters like that is against Secret Service (the agency responsible for the original free speech zones, and who I'd say is a pretty good candidate for the new batch that've been popping up as well) policy, and actually ADDS risk to a situation - they're wasting time dragging off anyone who dares to naysay the current administration while anyone with a gun, a grudge, and enough working brain cells to buy a "Bush/Cheney in '04" shirt could easily get close enough to cause some real trouble. | StaggerLee

It wasn't the Secret Service doing the actual arresting last time, either. Running mate John Edwards was asked about the flap yesterday by Fox News. "They weren't speaking for me, and they weren't speaking for John Kerry," he said, adding the ticket is "focused on our positive, optimistic vision of hope."

I guess Stagger's point - and mine- is that it's the law. The cops don't really have a choice in this, especially if the Feds are around. Once again, I am certain we don't have all the data, but the seeming facts are:
1. The people entered the area looking normal - ie: no protest material, because there was a free speech zone for protestors across the street.
2. They removed part of their clothing to reveal their protest material - proving that they knew they would be asked to enter the protest area if they hadn't.
3. They may or may not have made an audible protest by "singing the Anthem" either normally or very loudly.
4. They were asked to leave and enter the protest zone by the cops.
5. They refused and sat on their hands.
6. They were arrested for tresspassing and removed.
As civil disobediants, I salute them. If their goal is to protest the free-speech zones, then it seems like they are part way to success. They challenged the law and were arrested, which means they can, eventually challenge the constituionality of the laws.
But they were not removed unlawfully, nor was there somevast right-wing conspiracy to silence them, and the liberal blogs suggest. They broke the law.
And if that law is unconstitutional, their conviction, if it happens, will be overturned. But that's where they go now. And I wish them Godspeed, if that is their intention.
