So now, the WWF's open letter complaining about the internet reporting community's lack of professionalism is a "Media Ban" according to multiple articles on 1Wrestlingwithreality.com.

How exactly does an open letter constitute a media ban? Even Dave Scherer has said that the WWF has not changed their media policies one bit. I thought it was the wrestling feds that were supposed to lay on the hype, not the people covering them.

On top of that, the front page of 1Bob today reads like a cheesy gossip sheet, with speculation of Austin skipping RAW presented as fact, and more unattributed rumors than ever.

Anyone else get the idea that 1Bob is trying to milk this for everything they can to make themselves look like victimes. These same reports take pains to whore their "premium" site at every turn.

Reeks of desperation to me. It's really pathetic. If I didn't have my browser configured to cut out their pop-ups, I wouldn't even bother to read their site anymore. It's like they want to be more like Wrestleboard, or the other dirt recyclers.

You know, I tried to set up the browser to get rid of their popups, but I must not know how to do it right because it usually crashed. The pop-up stopper was also overwhelmed. Since it was either deal with 25 popups or crash my computer, I decided to cut the site out of my diet altogether. To paraphrase Woody Allen, I can't imagine the level of a mind that gives 1wrestling money for premium content. Then again, I can't imagine the level of a mind that watches "Baby Bob" (no pun intended.)

Rather than use an outside program, I just went into the "custom" level of my browser preferences and disabled cookies, java, and Active X controls. Before you do this, you shold have a fully-loaded browser that you can access in addition to your main browser. About one out of ten websites won't load right, so you'll need a fully-enabled backup if you want to be able to check those out.

I use Netscape as my backup browser, and the regular AOL Internet Explorer for my everyday browsing.

I did this out of privacy concerns after I clicked on a site one time and had a program installed on my computer that turned my cursor into Ken Shamrock's head. I didn't get any warnings, it just installed it and took over, and took forever to delete. So I went into my preferences and turned off all the Active X, java, and cookies.

After I did that, I found that I didn't get any more pop-ups. They need Active X to activate. I also don't get counted by the programs they use to calculate page visits.

On the down side, I have to log-in everytime I post here, and I never show up on the Wiener roll call when I'm here. But that's a small price to pay for being able to websurf faster.

Back to my original post, what really had me miffed was the way that 1Wrestling reported the rumor that Austin would miss RAW, and then posted a follow-up claiming that the report was corroborated by the Joey Styles update--which is part of their own premium site, and after that, under a headline that promised more details, ran a story that said the rumor was being discussed on the "No name radio show", which is part of their premium site.

And now they have a recap of Excess that mentions that Austin's name was mentioned on the show, so things must have gotten better.

There is one thing that I've never seen on 1Bob--a retraction. I'm a writer, and never really like to see a big corporation lean on a reporter legally, but in this case, I'd love to see the WWF sue, just to get 1Wrestling to post a retraction and apology.

And in the ongoing discussion of this matter in other threads, I don't put Keller and Meltzer in the same catagory as Ryder and Scherer. I subscribe to the Torch, and get a kick out of the way that they present themselves as a "Dirt" sheet. Meltzer seems to be a few years past enjoying the business, but I don't think he was really the target of that open letter either. He did contribute quotes to the Salon.com article, which was just the latest in a line of Phil Mushnick-style anti-McMahon articles by their sports reporter, but Meltzer hardly posts anything on his site anyway (although he did take the time to post that Austin WILL be on RAW this week after 1Bob went berserko).

I think that the WWF got really pissed at the Salon article, and even though 1Wrestling is probably beneath their radar, they have to be aware of the long history of sloppy reporting and anti-WWF bias that Ryder is responsible for.

That's why I'm glad I stumbled onto a way to read thier stuff for free, with no ads. If they were getting paid for my page views, I would have stopped looking at them long ago. As it is, they have some uses, but breaking news is not one of them. They're good for house show results, spoilers, and some commentary. But it's like the opposite of the old joke about the restraunt---the food is pretty bad, and there's so much of it!

I believe all they said was "who's going to go #1? Hollywood Hogan, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle?" Aside from that I don't remember anything about Austin.

The Pop Up Stopper at Panicware.com does wonders on 1wrestling. All it is is a program that does not allow any Explorer windows to open that are activated by the browser, not the user. So you can still right click and open a new window or open off the desktop- but if you log on to 1Bob and 1Bob tries to open a window it kills it. Its impossible (so I'm told)to block and does wonders for me.

You know, as long as Austin shows up Monday, it doesn't really matter if the stories they've been running on 1wrestling are true or not. In the grand scheme of things, it becomes a non-story.

Quite true, but even if he doesn't show, the treatment that 1wrestling has given it has been beyond the pale.

I mean, they have two items in their "Newsline" section which consist entirely of the "news" that Joey Styles has criticized McMahon in his hotline report, which is coincidentally available as part of their premium site. Most of the other reports concerning Austin in their news section are just hyping the paid section of their site, too.

And calling the open letter a "media ban" is just Dave Scherer flushing away any crediblity that he may have had left after defending Bob Ryder for so long.

I suppose it wouldn't bother me if 1Wrestling didn't show occasional glimmers of usefulness. I had no problem dumping Wrestleboard and Wrestlezone once I started going to the same places they swiped their news from.

But 1Wrestling.com showed some promise, before Ryder found the free time to start exerting pressure on the writers to follow his anti-WWF agenda. They always did bother me with the way they try to milk as many page hits as they can out of their content, but that was understandable as long as their reporting was legit.

Hmm, that's the one I have, but I find that the sheer number of popups overwhelms it... it gets so preoccupied with killing popups that the page can't actually load and everything goes nuts.

You would have to think that one day, AffordableLoans.com or whoever will figure out that it's not increasing their business any to have their ad shown to the same person 50 times in one visit, and will trim their advertising budget accordingly.
