EBGames is saying so.

Looks like they're really trying to get the jump on Madden. Amazon still lists the August ship date, but I'm sure that will be updated soon.

The ESPN Videogames website is still holding firm on the August ship date, although they use suspicious wording:

Please stay tuned for more information.

I found it interesting that they used the wording "erroneously posted". Knowing that EA has moved its date twice in response to Sega's, I'd guess that they were planning on announcing the street date at the last possible minute. And if this street date is correct, there's no way EA moves up Madden again, because that will eat into its NCAA sales.

I love that Sega's taking such an aggressive stance against the new 900-pound gorilla in Madden and EA. I don't think it will ultimately matter, as Madden is part of pop culture and Sega will have to do significantly more than releasing a better game to change that.

I think the lowered pricetag definately falls under 'doing more'. Before that, I wasn't going to look at 2k5 until next spring. Now I'm going to buy both, and if 2k5 drops before Madden, then they'll get my undivided attention first while Madden will have to fight to keep it's place in my house.

As long as Sega produces an "As good as" or a "Better than" game, they've set it up to win me over. Especially if next year's also comes out at the lowered price.

Personally I can't afford two games that are basically the same thing. So as someone who would only buy one i'd probably check out the first one as a rental and if I liked it then buy it, and just forget about whatever comes out after that. Of course in this case it doesn't mean i'm buying Sega's game becuase I'll be buying NCAA as my football game of choice, but I'm sure there are others that are the same as me and will buy 2k5 because they can't wait for a NFL game. Good move by Sega.

Gamestop also says the 20th now.

Rumblings from Beta testers say that while it's a good game, there are problems with the stats of some players and stat advancement. That could totally kill a franchise mode for me, and I really hope that they're not rushing an unfinished product to market just so they can get a head start on EA.

That is exactly the problem I am worried about. Original release date was September 9th. Obviously this puts them way behind EA's Madden. However, since Madden does not come out until next month, I see nothing wrong with waiting until then to release NFL2k5. Sega has to be VERY careful here because the strategy is to get new people into their game they better put out a good product or the game will fail for years to come. As it stands now I'm probably going to wait for a review or 2 before buying the game, even though with gift certificates from coke it'll only be $10.

Edit: Just went to the ESPN video games site (espnvideogames.com) (the one sega uses now instead of segasports.com) and they are now saying July 20th as well, so I guess its official.

I'm not so sure it completely matters about the stats. Stats are very subjective.

I mean, it may not play exactly like Madden's stats - but who says that Madden has it 100% anyway? You have to guess when you are ranking players, especially rookies.

Flutie has always been overrated by Madden, in my opinion. I know there have to be other guys like that as well, I just don't play Madden often.

I've always thought-and I could be wrong-that sports games, football in particular, were always finished long before the game is actually released, but the companies wait until the last minute possible to get the rosters as accurate as possible. I mean, Madden came out at the end of August last year, and the rosters were accurate as of, what, the end of July? So moving the date up shouldn't change things a whole lot, IMO. And, with the ability to do roster updates online, the whole thing's almost moot anyway.

I just got a peek at a copy of next week's Target ad, and they're going to be selling NFL 2K5 next week for $15.88. Holy crap. I might actually pick up a copy of this - that is, if it's coming out for Gamecube.

It will not be coming out for Gamecube as far as I know. 2k3 was the last Sega Sports football title for Gamecube.

I just figured I'd note, when returning my Spider-Man 2 rental today to my local videogame store, they had NFL 2K5 for sale. Canadian price of $29.99. If it's made it up here already, it should definitely be out in the States too!

I tried to find it today but got a late start and most Best Buy-ish places that would have it on day 1 were already closed. I'll probably go out tomorrow and grab it.

I've always preferred the 2k games to Madden anyway, so this is great for me.
