(This may have been adressed before, and I apologize if it has...I'm new-ish to the board....)

Why isn't there a SlashChat? I notice in the manifesto that the Zims don't want the board to be a surrogate chatroom- well no better remedy for that but to have a chat. The DVDVR guys have one...and I honestly think this board has more active users during the day than they do.

Or is it just a horribly bad idea?

You don't need them to create a chat feature for you to be able to chat with people from the board, you know?

It would be kind of awkward to IM all of these people at once...not to mention intrusive....

Off the top of my head, I know that AOL, Yahoo and ICQ all have (or had) the ability to create your own chat room for about 20 people whenever you wanted too - it's not a matter of IMing a whole bunch of people, just sending out the invite.

Taking off the board is a lot better for the people concerned, IMO - in the long run, someone's gonna be unhappy with the way the Zims run a chat room and the Zims aren't gonna be thrilled dealing with a chat room (since it's exponential tougher to keep under control than a message board), it seems saner to do chat as an outside thing.

Anyway, I thought the board was supposed to be about the site, and if you wanted to say something about the site and CRZ (and quite a bit less about the community of posters - this is all my assumption; I don't want to get anyone in trouble) and you could already be posting in one of those boards if you wanted to, there's no definite need for a chat room.

It'd make it easier if there was a little check box in the profile next to the AIM/ICQ info to indicate if you wanted people to randomly invite you to chat, but I don't see the need for the people in charge to do everything for the posters when they could much more easily organize it by themselves. More time for sleep for them, or whatever.

Alternatley there's nothing to stop you setting up an unofficial #slash or something on IRC. I'd hate to think what sorta bandwidth a chatroom would chew if the Zims were to try and host it on the poor little /Slash box.

Aaron wanted to program a mirc-like chat in association with W, but I told him not to waste his time, so he didn't. ;-) Myself, I prefer to camp out on AIM and (when I'm not away or idle, which is often) issue surly edicts from on high whenever the peons send me "Hey" messages because they've got NOTHING to talk about but want to talk anyway.....ask around if you don't believe me! I generally avoid chat invitations, too. So you're warned, anyway.

If you want to chat, there are A LOT of people who include their AIM screen names and ICQ numbers in their profiles. Pick your favourites and add them to your buddy list!

Hey, that "poor little slash box" has will go past 1 million pages served (that's pages, not hits - Yes, there is a difference) some time this weekend in only 3 months. There have been something like over 15 million queries executed by MySQL already...

Anyway -- I'm still thinking about this. I've got a friend who is going to try to explain to me how to set up Dancer with a nickserv for authentication. I may be able to tie in the user database from the message board into an irc server. If it's not too hard and I can set up a bot to run the channel, then I'll do it...

Don't hold your breath though. I just got a copy of the ACMLM 1.8 code and I'm going through it looking for changes that we can implement here. We forked the code at 1.65 for this site, so a lot of the database changes are not compatable - so I'm going to have to pick and choose what we add from the newer code.

This message board is based off of another message board. That was ACMLM board 1.65. We have maintained a reference to this in the copyright notice at the bottom of the page.

ACMLM continued to develop his board, and at the same time we modified the code that was based on his. We've both implemented certain features, but unfortunately, we have implemented some of them differently, so its not just a matter of taking the newer 1.8 release and copying it over our old 1.65 stuff.

Make sense?

So. I'm going through the PHP of the 1.8 release and looking for things that we haven't already recreated, and figuring out how to make it work in our current setup without breaking what we have modified on our own.

I wasn't having a shot at our beloved slash box there. I've had absolutely no worries getting into here from Australia, where some, "bigger name" sites come up short time after time.

You do seem like a glutton for punishemnt though Guru. I think we've gone way past the point where you and CRZ could easily have said, "Just be happy with what you've got."

If you do ever end up with a chat, I would suggest finding some people you can trust and who have some experience with IRC-based chats to operate it on top of the bot. There are, after all, some things a bot can't deal with.

Yeah, Chris is all sorts of surly. Dusty once said "live the gimmick". Or something.

Meanwhile, since CZim made the suggestion, hundreds of Travis fans are deluging me with IMs as we speak...THANKS, CHRIS.

and I never mentioned it before, but good on you, Chris, for spelling words like "favourite" correctly.

and while this type of thing is being discussed, thanks also for having the date the right way round on slash and here. Saves me a few headaches anyway! . You're not secretly European are you, CRZ?

Good on you?

The only people I know that say that are Australian, or were stationed in Australia... which is it Q?

BTW - While he may have been born in Germany - I can vouch for the fact that CRZ has no excuse for his Euro-isms. By the time he could talk we lived in Washington, followed by Texas, and then followed by California.

I don't know where the date stuff comes from either. It really should be in the form 2002.03.25 so that you can order a directory of files alphabetically and get the dates to work out correctly...

(I'll settle for how Oracle does it and go 1020325 though too)

We say "Good on you" in the UK, at least everwhere that I've lived. I must admit I kindof just assumed everybody said it everywhere in the world... whats that they say about two continents seperated by a common language? .
