I'm surprised that this hasn't gotten some attention here. I'd love to here spf's local coverage.

Jack Ryan, the Republican candidate in this November's close Illinois Senate race, faced calls from within his own party to quit after allegations by his ex-wife that he took her to strip clubs and pressured her to have sex in front of strangers.

The allegations, contained in documents from the couple's bitter custody battle four years ago, caused an immediate sensation in Illinois. But senior Republicans in Washington were acutely aware that the scandal could conceivably help to hand control of the Senate back to the Democrats in November......

Ryan, 44, was married to the television actress Jeri Lynn Ryan, whose career highlight was the starring role of the Borg crew member Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager. In documents released on Monday, she alleges that in the late 1990s her then-husband took her to "bizarre clubs" in New York, New Orleans and Paris, where he asked her to have sex -- "and specifically asked other people to watch."

Ask, and ye shall receive.

Locally, the sense is that it's a big story, but would have been even bigger if anyone thought he had a prayer in this race to begin with. But since at one point last month before the files were unsealed he was at 57-30 behind Barack Obama, there's a sense that this is more defiling a corpse than killing someone.

Now, the interesting part to me is that, talking to some friends of mine who work for members of the IL GOP and for various IL GOP Reps in DC (yes, I still commisserate with former colleagues), is that the party is feigning ignorance of something they have known about for a while. The sex clubs thing has been being whispered about since during the primary season. The speculation that I have been hearing is that they hedged their bets by letting it go unmentioned (since Ryan is an attractive candidate otherwise, even I was impressed by him), but that this way should it have come out, they could possibly slip former Gov. Jim Edgar or current Treasurer/GOP Chair Judy Baar Topinka into the race instead, without having to fight through the highly ideological primaries that they might not have gotten through (both are fairly moderate socially, and to the left of much of the IL GOP on social issues). The only complicating factor to that is that Edgar has been the Illinois Hamlet for years now (the man is more indecisive than Mario Cuomo) and that Judy Baar may have her eyes set more on Blagojevich in 2006. But if either one ever wanted to take a shot, this is the moment to do it. Otherwise they're going to be stuck with someone like Fmr. Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, or Rep. Steve Rauschenberger, or Ron Gidwitz. None of whom is likely to be able to beat Obama who is polling extremely well even in traditional GOP bases like DuPage County.

So, it's a fun story, and it could lead to some massive political wheeling and dealing if Edgar, Topinka, or the ultimate long shot, Fmr. Gov. Jim Thompson, decide to get in. But really, this seat was lost for the GOP long ago. IL has pretty much gone Dem in major statewide races, and the only way a GOP person gets in is through running fairly left and hoping for a break, or running against someone totally incompetent (how Fitzgerald got into the Senate beating Mosely-Braun).

Or, as one GOP staffer I know put it "well, we had to do something to top Clinton's book. His just has blow jobs. We have whips and cages and Hollywood starlets. GO GOP~!"

This is not an attack, I swear, but merely an observation. This sort of behavior seems more common among more conservative individuals both Rep and Dem. In fact surveys indicate a much higher rate of strange sexual behavior among people with these political beliefs.

I always found it amusing that Carter was painted as the less moral, less family oriented candidtae in 1980 and it stuck. A man who felt bad because he lusted in his heart.

Remember do as I say, not as I do.

Well, it's certainly hit the right notes of one of those fun election stories, if Ryan had any type of chance to win. Otherwise I'm sure this is getting more run in the Star Trek message boards than anywhere else.

Actually, it has dominated Chicago media the last few days. There were no fewer than 6 stories in the Sun-Times (suntimes.com) yesterday, including an editorial where they basically bitch that Ryan hoodwinked all of them and accuse him of hiding behind his son for his own political aspirations. They pretty much torpedoed his candidacy in every section of the paper except the stock tables and the horoscope.

That's why I love Chicago: it's one of the few towns more politically insane (or at least close) than Miami.

This is what happens when you basically have the last working Pharoah in the world running the place. One day they will build a pyramid for Daley I and Daley II in the middle of the new Millenium Park (so-called because it will take a millenium to pay off apparently).

You really cannot appreciate how weird politics in Chicago are unless you live here. There are no parties, no dissension brooked in the city government. It really is almost like the USSR. But the Gov. and the Mayor of Chicago hate each other even though they're both Dems. The Junior Senator and the Speaker of the House are at each other's throats. The IL Attorney General is the daughter of the Majority Leader of the IL House, who is at the throat of the governor, again all of the same party. The GOP basically has excommunicated their last governor for the death penalty moratorium. I love this state.

If Ryan ever moves to Massachusetts and becomes a Democrat, he will at least be qualified for a seat in Congress.
If he is in dire need of employment now though, he has at least passed a major criteria for an executive vice president position for Ted Turner.

That's what I'm saying. Screw the controversy, I'd be handing out bumper stickers saying "I dressed Jeri Ryan in tight leather and took her to sex clubs, vote for me!" Unless his opponent can pull out a tape of himself having sex with Paris Hilton the election is over right then and there.

Actually I was leaning more towards Congressman Barney Frank having a boyfriend run a male escort service out of his Washington residence a few years back.

Well it's hard to get more insane than Miami. When Chicago has dead people voting for city mayor in a race between guys nicknamed "Crazy Joe" and "Mayor Loco" and they elect people to office who are, technically, in jail - then they'll come close to Miami. (Never a boring day here... lol)

Oh, and don't forget he was a ridiculously "dirty" governor, probably the worst in the last hundred years...

Ryan had no chance before the divorce papers came out. Downstate, Obama was killing him in the polls....

I don't know that he was the dirtiest, or if like Nixon he was just the most incompetent about covering his tracks. Having known a lot of people who were tight with some of our other recent governors, I know Ryan was not exactly abnormal for his behavior.

That said, had Ryan not done the moratorium and had he been more blindly anti-abortion, he likely would have gotten a second term nomination.

Heh. As much as I want to rip the GOP a new one, I wont. I mean politicians on both sides are going to end up doing things like these. And I don't care. And since the guy was getting schellacked it really doesn't matter that this was released.

In the man's defense, he was smart enough to know that a pretty wife can be an asset in the political field, even if he has to pimp her out to make her so.
