How crazy is that 7th hole at Shinnecock? Anything that missed the hole went right off the back of the green.

I think the scores are going to keep going backwards tomorrow with the wind picking up, and nerves are going to be slightly frayed.

Other good sub-stories:

-Tiger Woods' former coach Butch Harmon says Tiger is fooling himself if he thinks he's close to where he wants to be, and Tiger's bewildered response.

-Two South Africans (Retief Goosen, Ernie Els) in the final pairing.

-David Duval shows up, plays like me(ie. brutally), and smiles more than he has in the past four seasons combined.

Duval needs a couch and a good psychiatrist. Anybody know exactly what went on in his life? He said it was personal stuff, didn't he? I"m glad to see him back on the course, having a good time.

This whole "Tiger swing" thing is getting out of hand. If the guy doesn't want to fix his swing, then let him play the way that he's playing. Sure, he's not the man he once was, but I love it. I'm so glad he's not winning all the time, and I really enjoy seeing him struggle. He's human. I'm sure TV ratings struggle as he struggles, which is why there is so much focus on the man. If they can't get him winning, why not focus on him losing?

I heard on a sports show that Duval caught his wife sleeping with a good friend of his. That's some hard shit to deal with, ya know...Speaking of women, Tiger hasn't won a major since hooking with that hot swede. Anyway I think Tiger made Harmon and not the other way around.

Duval just got married a few months ago. Don't believe everything you hear on sports radio.

Basically, here's what happened, to the best of my knowledge. Duval was fighting various injuries, which made it impossible for him to play to his level. This led to him getting depressed, because he couldn't play the way he wanted to.

So, he basically bagged it for a while. Now he's healthy, happy, and back. Yeah, it'll take him a while to get back to the level he used to be at, but it'll come. I'm just happy to see him back on tour again.

As for Tiger making Harmon, not the other way around, that might be one of the craziest things I've ever heard. Yes, Butch Harmon gained fame from have El Tigre as a client, but the man is a flat-out badass swing coach. Tiger needs to swallow his pride and go back to him.

I'm a sports junikie but I will admit that I'm not always up to par on golf knowledge. I still think that Tiger has gone downhill since he got whipped by the Sweede and and ever since he switched to using Nike clubs. The stats out there that show what Tiger used to do before he started using Nike and after are phenominal. I think he stopped using the Nike driver but still uses the irons for contract reasons. Although I do remember hearing something a while ago about Nike saying Tiger could use any club he wanted.

Apparently, the 7th green was misprepared yesterday. That accounted for much of the wackiness.

They were discussing it on the Golf Channel right after the 3rd round was over and said the hole would be "fixed" for tomorrow.

The 7th - they cut and then rolled it - all it was missing was the clown's mouth

Tiger's swing - his swing isn't different but he's not the same golfer and he is fooling himself into thinking he is - he mainly plays for the majors and Jack's record - I think he should probably play some more of the weekly Tour stops to get his confidence back

Duval - he had an inner ear problem to go with some minor nagging injuries - he's been spending most of his downtime snowboarding in Idaho - it's good to see him back - maybe he's learn that golf is more fun and that you play better when you don't take the game so seriously.

Should be an interesting Final 18 holes today

Well, the course is already biting into the players today. Craig Stadler figures that 1/3 of the players are going to shoot in the 80s.

It's gonna be hide-your-eyes ugly, folks.

You can shoot 83-82 at Shinnecock?

I'm predicting the winning score to be even par or (at most) 1 or 2 under. I'm hoping that my boy Mike Weir can put together a charge, but in the end, I think Ernie Els is going to win the title.

p.s. NBC has the worst golf coverage of any major network. The first TWO HOURS of yesterday's coverage was stories about Shinnecock, talking to different players, everything but showing the actual golf being played on the course. And even once the leaders teed off, anyone not in the last four groups (except, of course, for Tiger) barely got on TV.

You know, I like most of the announcers on NBC, but it is sad that Dan F'n Hicks is the lead guy. I know him more from crappy coverage of Volleyball than from anything else. He just isn't very vocal. I wish they could have stolen Jim Nantz away for this one event.

Oh, and GO PHIL!

I'm watching coverage with the sound off, since NBC really has horrible announcers.

Golf is great to watch on the second picture of a PIP or Dual Picture TV. You don't need the sound and if anything really COOL happens, they'll replay it like 5 times.

As long as Ernie or Phil wins, I'm happy.

BTW, I really disliked the way that David Fay backpedaled on the Steve Williams/camera thing. But what do you expect?

ESPN had some horrible coverage earlier this week. Chris Berman should not do golf. Every time he opened his mouth, he sounded like Buck Laughlin from Best in Show (Click Here (imdb.com)), asking stupid questions and going off on some meaningless tangents. I know it's not football season, so his swami hat is in storage, but let's not get the bright idea to throw him into golf coverage, please.

This has turned into quite the horse race, with Michelson and Goosen tied at 4 under as I write this.

And an unfortunate double bogey by Phil on 17 proves to be the difference.

What a display of nerves by Retief, though. Congrats to him.

Two Canadians in the top 10 (Weir, Ames), although you never saw them on TV.

I think something like two dozen golfers shot 80 or higher.

I wish CBS would take over all major tournaments, and steal Johnny Miller in the process.

Big Bad: "You can shoot 83-82 at Shinnecock?"

Maybe in normal conditions, but a major nemesis of mine is wind, so I doubt I would have broken 108(double-bogey golf) this weekend.

Man, my best EVER score is 104, so if I somehow hit a 108 at Shinnecock, I think I'd be either doing cartwheels up 18 or have that weird Joker-esque frozen smile that Mickelson has had since the Masters.

Tough loss for Phil, but good news for the Goose. He's the guy that nobody really gave a lot of thought towards this week, and now here he is with two Opens. Fun fact: since 1997, only Goosen, Singh, Els and O'Meara have won two majors. Woods of course has his eight career.

Goosen was fantastic down the stretch. I can't remember which hole it was, but he drove into the rough, second shot into the rough, chipped on and sank the 15 foot putt for par... While everyone around him was missing putt after putt (Boy did Ernie ever blow Sunday) Goosen was rock solid.

I feel for Phil, rough way to lose it on 17, but he still shot a 71 on a day when the average score was 78+.

In terms of coverage, the most frustrating thing as a Canadian was that they kept showing all of Maggert's shots, but non of Weir's who was playing with him. It was painful. They kept showing all of Fred Funks shots because he was paired with Phil... (oh ya, he's American too)

The Lefty we all know and love came back with that double bogey on 17 but now that Phil has his Green Jacket, I don't think he really cares if he ever wins another Major.

I like all the complaining going on now. It looks like most pros don't like it when a course makes them look bad. Personally, I love it. I'd much rather they hover around even then have a winner at 25 under.

I just don't want to hear all this "Phil choked again" talk...It's not choking when you come in second in a major...It's not choking when the player that beat you played just AWESOME (11 one putts, are you kidding me??). It's not choking when you shoot 71 on a course where the course average for the day was 79. Phil will be back...the British Open isn't really his thing, but he'll take a few tournaments between now and the PGA Championship.

Now someone tell me why the PGA has such a ridiculous points ranking system, that still allows Tiger Woods to be number 1 in the world.

Fun fact - Phil is actually right-handed. He learned to golf by watching his dad, so he'd stand directly opposite him, making it a mirror-image. Thus, he golfs lefty, but is actually righty.
