Just kind of an opinion thing about interleague, with the end nearing...

I am watching the Yanks play LA for the first time (besides pre-season), and there is an electricity there from the fans....at least it seems. I am honestly rather tired of the six games every season with the Mets, but I really enjoyed the Padres series, and NYY/LA is shaping up well. I think the only two teams left for the Yanks that they haven't played during interleague are the Brewers (nothing electric there, since they used to be AL), and the Pirates ('62 or '64 series?). Eh. I wouldn't mind seeing the "play each division every three years" thing go to a "play each division every four years" and have every fourth year be a "no interleague" year.

The thing is, interleague only works in a very few cases. The inter-city games are cool, and also it's cool when someone like a Barry Bonds plays in cities like Toronto or Cleveland that have never seen him before.

But really, the majority of match-ups are things like Pittsburgh/Kansas City, and with all apologies to Royals or Pirates fans, this doesn't get my heart racing.

I like the interleague stuff. Rockies' biggest crowds of the past three years have been for interleague games. I'd rather see Rockies-Orioles than another round of Rockies-Padres. Last year I went to a Rockies-Tigers game and met an old guy who was absolutely thrilled to see his Tigers come in for a visit. He'd been in Denver since the 60's and since then, health concerns and budget prevented him from traveling back to Detroit. And he finally got to see Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson.

I really dislike the competative inbalance of it. Sure, there will be competative inbalance across the wild-card spectrum with the unbalanced schedule. But, let's face it, in a pennant race, even in the AL East, is it fair for the Yankees to get the Mets six times while the BLue Jays get the Expos six times?

I personally, would rather see the whole thing scrapped. Yeah, I've gotten to see Arizona and San Francisco this year. Yes, I can now say that I have seen Barry Bonds play in person. But if I was that concerned about that, Philly is two hours away.

I like the interleague play when teams play other teams in their own area, for example NL East vs. AL East. I really like when the Phillies go to Yankee Stadium or Fenway, and I've just amazingly fun times when they go down to Baltimore. The games are usually pretty competetive, and the atmosphere is great.

This year, the Philies play the White Sox, Twins, Tigers, and Royals. Not a lot of history there (except the PHI/KC 80 World Series), and not geographical rivals, either.

When it comes to inter-league play in baseball, I agree with Grimis:

IMHO the inter-league schedule does too much harm to the integrity of the pennant races, and therefore should be discontinued. However, I am also in agreement with Roy.'s statement:

Making the fans care about each game is the key to success of any sports league, and nothing makes the fans care more than a strong rivalry. Speaking as a Mets fan, few things in baseball get my blood pumping quicker than when the Mets head into Yankee Stadium for a series, or when the Yanks come to Shea for a few games. So, if it was up to me (and God knows it's not) I would scrap inter league play, and then I would re-align the leagues to put natural and geographic rivals together in the same division. Does it buck tradition? Sure; but then, so does inter-league regular season play. Re-alignment would give the fans what they want while still preserving the integrity of the pennant races. At least, IMHO.

Interleague was cool at first and it still works in some cases where there are natural rivalries, but those should be booked on a year to year basis. Yankees vs. Mets, Cubs vs. Sox, Jays vs. Expos are interesting in small doses, but in instances where the matchups don't mean anything - the Pittsburgh vs. KC example was raised - what's the point? St. Louis vs. KC? Sure. Pirates and Royals? Who cares? IMO, all the excessive interleague games do is diminish the cool factor of the all star game and World Series.

I don't think it's any coincidence that the AS game has diminished in popularity since interleague play started. Granted, the strike had something to do with it too, but suddenly those dream matchups weren't a big deal anymore since you'd probably already seen them in the first sweep of interleague games.

As far as the fairness of competition goes, alright, I see that's an issue. Have one three game series between rivals. One team hosts one year, the other hosts the next year, kinda like they do in major college sports. Consider an example: the A's are a huge power and play the consistently weak Giants. The Angels don't like this because they contend in the AL West and play the Dodgers, who are also a competitive team. Assume:

a.) no matter how good the A's are relative to the Giants, they're not going to sweep them every year...that's just baseball,

b.) for this to make a difference in the Angels playoff fortunes they have to be a good team, and thus are likely to win at least one game from the Dodgers even in a down year

Over time, you're going to be looking at a difference of maybe one game every year or two. Honestly, that's hardly a difference that matters over a 162 game schedule year after year. Finally, consider the fact that most if not all the teams that perennially suck don't have enough fan interest to have a real rival worthy of an interleague game anyway. In other words, there really is no problem with changing the format after all.

Of course, this wouldn't help Bud's Brewers, so it's probably a moot point anyway.

I also agree with it being inballanced, like Grimis said there is still going to be inbalance in the Wild Card race, but that's just too bad if you can't win your own division, all the teams in the same division should play the same schedule.

Also I liked the big matchups that haven't happened in a while, it's pretty cool to say this is the first time in so many years the Yanks have play the Cubs, or the Yanks have played the Dodgers, but now what? Next time they will play it will just be, this is the first time they've played in 3 years. That's no big deal There's not going to be any big long awaited matchup that hasn't happened in forever in the World Series. Which is one of the great things about college football in my opinion is when you get those two big programs that haven't played each other recently.

Plus it's killer on my fantasy baseball team because I have 2 DHs who have been missing a lot of games this week.

I hate interleague play. If there was no wild card and it was still 2 divisions in each league, perhaps I could live with interleague play. However, with the wild card, each interleague game diminishes the number of times potential wild card teams can battle each other. Why should the A's play the Giants as many times as they'll face the Red Sox? I'd rather see Red Sox/White Sox than Red Sox/Rockies. Plus, due to interleague scheduling, you get situations like the Orioles or Blue Jays not facing the Yankees until after the All-Star Game, and then playing them 19 times in less than 70 games. Plus, why should teams have to play 9 games outside of the rules of their league during a season, which means a team could have to play opposite of the way they are composed and deal with a handicap?

Personally, I think the only time the leagues should meet is the All-Star game and the World Series. However, the fans feel differently and are voting with their pocketbooks that they like it. As someone who loves baseball above all other sports, if it helps atendance and interest, go for it.

Shaddup! I bought the most expensive seats in the house to today's game. The John 3:16 seats!!! (for a whopping $40 Canadian, GOD BLESS A TEAM NO ONE WANTS TO SEE!)

I *had* to pick today rather than yesterday's 17-14 game.

I see nothing wrong with interleague play and I think it should be on a rotating basis like it is in the NFL. Sure you get some dog match-ups but don't you get the same each week in the NFL ?

I think they should just stick with geographical rivals or teams that may have had an old rivalry or some history. The Pittsburgh Detroit games don't really get me going, but if each team played a rival somewhat nearby that would be good and garner some excitement. I also think they should cut it down, if it were only 2 series a year I think it would be a little more exciting.

If a team is playing the same geographic rivals each year, like the Yanks do with the Mutts, it will loses luster. I am not saying that I had been tingly waiting for the Rockies to come to the Bronx, but at least with the rotation, I get to see them visit LA for the first time (outside of preseason) since 81, Zona since the 01 WS, and last year I watched them at Wrigley, which to me was cool. I think that as long as they unbalance the schedules and keep the divisions balanced, they should do the same thing with interleague play. The way it looks, while the Yanks play the Mets 6 times and Arizona 3, Boston plays 3 against Philly, Frisco, and Atlanta. I would rather watch my team play at Frisco than Flushing, myself.

I hope you're all watching the Dodgers and the Yankees on ESPN.

Gagne just blew a 98 m.p.h. fastball past A-Rod to end the 8th. 5-3 Dodgers.

So if we get rid of interleague play then instead of getting jacked up for this weekend's Cubs vs. Sox war, I'll get another couple games against the Tigers and the Indians?! Oh, I do so swoon at the thought.

Watch behind you, if the Indians have a good series, you might go into the Cubs series in 3rd place.
Dropping interleague play would not mean more than the 19 division games. Instead, it would mean 3 (9-10 games)series with all the other teams in the AL, instead of 2 series with some and 3 series with others. Wouldn't it be nice for the White Sox fans not to be done with the Yankees in April, or are those scintillating games against the Expos something that needs to be savored. And, lose the division by 1 or the wild card by 1, and you wonder what could have been if Konerko and Thomas and the whole offense was in the line-up for the 9 no DH NL games.
