I've been checking out HHH for as long as I can remember (about 6 years, actually), and I must say it's a gutsy move for him to become a Babyface. But, in his recent promos, I must say, they lack that certain... focus. That unwavering focus that always jumped out at me. I watched a tape of HHH doing one of his promos when he was the "Accomplice". THAT hit me in the right places. These days, it's just ho-hum. I'll be as patient as I can with him, because remember it HAS been four years since he did this last. What do you think?

I think he has as well. His heel promos, heck his whole heel character were amazing, and his motivation wasn't hard to figure out. he either wanted power (power in this case meaning "titles") and was willing to crush anyone to get it (in 1999) or crush anyone to keep it (in 2000)

But yeah, now that he's a face, he doesn't seem that intesne. Probably because its hard to cut an intense promo about your dog.

Remember also that when he was a face last his promos revolved around him saying "Suck it" and acting goofy. So I'm guessing he's trying to learn to walk the fine line between "Steve Austin bad ass cool" and "HHH intense heel". So far, I'll give him a B-. He's working in the catchphrases, which is a must for any face, but he seems to be forcing his interviews alot of times, because he can't rely on banter with the crowd between plot points like he used to.

I think he's doing a good job with the promos, his in-ring work is a less than what I'm used to with him. However, Austin wasn't really back from his injury until No Way Out and that was almost six monthes. Its hard to do the character adjustment that is being required by HHH. I thought his last promo on Raw was really good. He needs sometime with it, but he is doing a better job than most.

Austin & Angle had some really good RAW matches in December and January before No Way Out where Austin pretty much let Angle throw him around the ring for 25 straight minutes until HHH interferd. Both men had their working boots on and produced some really good TV main events that led to their PPV encounters later that year.

Methinks twenty five minutes is a slight exaggeration there. It was closer to fourteen. And Angle was shifting the majority of the weight there-Austin did kinda go with the flow rather than carry the match.

I never really thought Triple H was very good on the mic as a heel or a face. He has a knack for beating a point into the ground and stating and restating the obvious. He's not horrible on the mic, but he's never been in the Austin/Foley/Rock/Jericho class either.

I never have been a big HHH fan, but at least his heel role from say mid 99 to mid 2000 or so was a smart coherent character, and the interviews, while formulaic at least fit into the role. Now he finds himself vacillating way too much and, while partially again the fault of bad angles, can't seem to find one groove. There seems to be a constant fight in him between letting the very cool, relaxed ultra-confident HHH who played quasi-face while Foley was commissioner out and trying to maintain the kill em all bad-ass persona from his heel run. And really, he hits the catchphrases quite weak, but then they're just not as much fun to chant as the other top guys repetoires are. It doesn't help that most of his face interviews since returning have seemingly been face-offs with Steph, who can suck the enjoyment out of any segment she's involved in, so I'll hold off a final judgment until his first prolonged non-Steph oriented feud.

Mistress, you hit the nail on the head about why I'm not a big Trip fan anymore... his heel promos were logical, intense, and believeable. Yet he still managed to work in his catch phrases without them seeming too forced. But when was the last time you heard Trip talk about being the game because he is that damn good? Even without those phrases... just the feeling and the intensity behind his words... when was the last time you truly "felt it" when Trip talked? I haven't since his return.

And for the record, I was a big fan of his DX work as well, be it the smart-assed election speech, the invasion of Nitro, or the "You dropped the ball, Shawn" speech after Wrestlemania. Be it humor or anger, you always believed what he was saying... or at least knew that he believed in it. That's what made the promos so entertaining.

So I've gotta believe that it's more the schlock that he's being forced to sell that's causing the problem. Trip is indeed a student of the game. He's got some grasp on what will result in a money-making angle. But instead of selling that, he's being forced to defend the honor of his (fake) dog.

And if he does indeed have all that "stroke" backstage that the net bitched about all last year, then I'm forced to one sad, sad conclusion. Trip is too p-whipped to tell his woman that she's clueless.

Triple H's heel promos were great. They were serious and told a story. They showed that he was tough but had a touch of fear of the faces. They showed he was a cheating bastard. They were long and repetitve but entirely without catchphrases. They showed his only love was competing and winning, at all costs. Basically, they were everything an Attitude era babyface promo should not be. Face promos are short, often funny, predictable enough for the audience to get involved, fearless, and cool. That's the big problem - realistically adjusting "The Game", the character that brought him to the main event level, to facedom. It's a tough shift, without, as has been been said, shifting to DX mode. I'm not exactly sure how he's going to do it. Besides fighting with Stephanie and coming back after being gone a while, what has he done to make himself a face?

I've always thought Triple H was at the bottom with promo skills when talking about the top guys. He really seemed to do a lot of talking without actually saying anything.

I never thought of HHH as a good promo guy. He was fine as a heel cos he could let his ass whoooping do most of the talking. It doesn't seem like they think that would work for a face.
And DX wasn't that interesting imho. Especially after Shawn left.
Anyway, there's a test for promo goodness that I like to do:
Can you name the action/reversal cards for the wrestler in the wwf ccg?
Example:
Austin (good mic work)'s cards:
That's the bottom line...
cos Stone Cold said so
What?
Open up a can of whoopass

HHH (not-so-good mic work):
Time to play the game
I am the game
It's all about the game
Cos I'm that damn good...

Well, anyway, I think it's pretty obvious how his lines just aren't that memorable

Sorry-gratuitous plug, But I swear I am not affiliated, I just like the game

It's pretty obvious that most of you guys prefer him as a heel. I however want to give him more time. After all, Steph is now gone from WWF TV for a while (your definition of 'a while' may vary). I believe that will now free him up to his potential of becoming a believable face again. You guys are hammering home some damn good points, but I'm not giving up on him.
