Well I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I signed into my Yahoo! Mail account!!

I had heard that there were going to be some changes to the service, but I did not know when. While I'm sure a bunch of changes were made, I think these two are the ones that most users will enjoy:

1) They increased the size of the mailbox from 4MB (I personally had 6MB having had this account since almost the beginning of Yahoo! Mail) to 100MB. My mailbox went from 40% full to 2% full overnight!! That was a nice thing to get to work & see :-)

2) The per message size has been increased to 10MB. While still not great for many business related files (I work at a graphic design firm & most of our files dwarf that number), it's great for most personal emails.

Just thought this might be some info my fellow W's would be interested in...

Pretty cool...especially the 100 MB thing...then again, when they changed the trash and bulk mail from not counting against the size helped me enough..but now...shit, I may not need to delete another email again...

With the 10 MB size....now I can email songs and shit...which I hadn't been able to do before.

Worst part is that I paid for the 10MB mailbox just yesterday. Of course, because I paid for that I know have a 2GB mailbox capacity...

You now have a two-gig mailbox site? Jeez, it wasn't too long ago that having a two-gig hard drive was incredible.

I suppose you could just beg for a Gmail invite, though.

(Yes, I just got one today. How exactly do invites get handed out? All I know is people with Blogger accounts get 'em. I got mine from a friend's site where someone was giving them away.)

There are over five thousand invites currently up for auction on eBay - I believe that's the new vehicle of choice, as it's gone up exponentially over the past week. Current winning bids are hovering around $10 and will probably go down slowly over the next couple days if you're patient. OR maybe the beta period will suddenly end very soon! Who knows?

At first I thought the slowdown was due to the Mail service upgrade as well, but it turns out that THIS (story.news.yahoo.com) may have been the reason...

Once someone has a G-mail account and has used it a few times, s/he is given a set of invites (10, I think). I just got one, although I haven't used it enough to have invites yet (can't access net-based email from work anymore).

You know if you have a spare invite I would love to have one

As for Yahoo I like it. There are some small problems. Like when I reply to an email it starts the text below the quote not above like it use to. And why Yahoo spam filter is pretty good it still lets some messages into my mailbox that I fell it should get.

Normally, I would say "YEAH RIGHT!". But with Gmail giving away so much space & Yahoo! doing what they did to compete, it should be interesting to see if Hotmail tries to catch up.

THere are some mail servers who have made their space unlimited. For example www.mail.ru

It's probably of little interest to most of you but there's probably more.

There's probably a vast difference in existing subscriber base, though.

Google has once again been incredibly smart with GMail. Why do you need to be invited? First, so they never go over capacity and can build as they go; second, to do what Google does best and capture as much data as they can as the tendrils unfold and connections between people are made. They will find a way to use the data they glean about who got his or her invite from whom just like the primary motiviation for the 1GB limit is that they want you to keep your mail around so they can mine it and target ads at you (not that I think this is a de facto bad thing, just saying).

Yahoo has a large installed base, but they've got a ton of cash, a desire to re-make their name, and a chance to get a leg up on Microsoft. Jumping to 100MB is a quick and easy way to do it, provided their archtecture can handle it.

Microsoft is, once again, the sluggish behemoth. Lately they haven't even been able to keep the service up reliably worldwide. There are probably 10 times as many active hotmail accounts as Yahoo accounts. They're apparently running on Windows software now (they used to run on BSD). Microsoft would need months of assessment to even decide whether they could actually do it or not. Then they'd have to start over to implement it.

They'll do it; they have to. But it'll be a bugger and a huge shmozz for sure.

I thought so too, until I read THIS:

I was pretty suprised at that.

Meanwhile, my Yahoo! Mail was pretty slow today, but not quite as slow as yesterday.

I don't use Hotmail anymore but some suspect it has "issues" with Gmail:

Receiving a coveted invitation to open a free e-mail account on Google's Gmail is a thrill that's literally lost on Microsoft.

At least it was for Joel Johnson's girlfriend, whose MSN Hotmail account (a rival free e-mail service) bounced invitations to join Gmail twice last Wednesday. ... He added that several people e-mailed him about having had the same trouble inviting Hotmail users to Gmail. One person said that invitations to Orkut, Google's social networking site, were blocked by Hotmail.

Etc etc: Hotmail giving cold shoulder to Google mail? (news.com.com)

On a related note, using the SBC Yahoo dial up (moving out into the country SEEMED like a good idea) I noted when I imported my bookmarks some were mysteriously not brought over. And the new mail boxes seem like a great idea, but half the time I cant get the thing to delete mail.
