Nicole Kidman and a 10 year old lad (thesun.co.uk)

This story really reminds me of Michael Jackson for some reason...dunno why...The latest I've heard is that the questionable scenes are being removed from the film. But still I guess a film like this wouldn't play very well here in the US huh ? The kid in the film is Cameron Bright who played the little boy in Godsend.

But still I don't think Nicole Kidman should be fooling around with an underage kid, simulated or otherwise. I won't bash the movie without having seen, but it probably won't end up being one I want to see.

FYI, Birth was directed by Jonathan Glazer who did SEXY BEAST.

I wonder where, precisely, the line is between "acceptable" and "child pornography". I think this movie's gonna be in danger of going waaaay over that line.

Other "acclaimed" films have done worse. Only thing is, it was always a young girl. If the parents didn't object and no one forced the kid, then that is it. All you can do is judge them in the mental courts.

Keep in mind that this is the Sun reporting the story, so it might have to be taken with a grain of salt.

But if it is true, you'd think that after her marriage, Kidman would've had enough of making out with guys that are so much shorter than she is.

If it is true, I fully expect Hollywood to rally around the liberal flag and protect the film's "creativity."

I think that this blurs the line between edgy and snuff...leaning snuff.

Well I originally heard the story reported on Glenn Beck so I assume there is some truth to it. Though maybe some of the descriptions are being blown out of proportion.

Well, not snuff, because a snuff film is a pornographic or exploitative film where one of the participants is murdered, but I understand your point.

If it gets defended I think that it will be a knee jerk reaction to a lot of what is going on today in the entertainment industry. With tv-networks and movie studios on guard more than ever due to reactionaries from both the left and the right, as well as parent groups, I think that a lot of Hollywood lately is circling the wagons, so to speak. I'm going to reserve judgement until I see the movie and until credible sources report on it.

That said, while Hollywood might honor and protect pedopiles (Roman Polanski, anyone?), if this movie is nothing but cheap exploitation for the sake of exploitation, I'd be surprised if the majority of Hollywood defends it.

It's really impossible to make a call on this one without seeing the film in its entirety. While I understand the sort of objections that people have against it, a film has a right to an artistic point of view, even if that point of view is objectionable to some, or even most. Art, according to some, is supposed to hold a mirror up to reality, and sick shit like this happens all the time. A film has the right to address that. Of course, there are always the lines of good taste and exploitation, and again, if you haven't seen the film, you can't really make that call. Of course, if you object to the subject matter in general, you are under no impetus to see the film. No one's going to make you.

As for the issue of child pornography, I imagine that would be judged under the standards of obscenity, which are that it would have to be (1) work appealing predominantly to "prurient" interest; (2) that it depicts or describes sexual conduct in a patently offensive way; and (3) that it lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. All according to an average member of the community in question, and therefore community standards.

Ever heard of "The Tin Drum"?

Anything can be targeted if those who dislike it are fanatical enough.

Well, you may have noticed how vaguely the obscenity standards are. There's enough room to have anything even vaguely sexual classified as obscenity, if you can prove (or at least fake prove) that it violates the community standards. It's really not the best law, but I've never been able to come up with a better way to judge what is or is not obscene. It really just boils down to "we'll know it if we see it."

Roman Polanski is a decorated filmmaker. Roman Polanski was also convicted with statutory rape. The two facts, while related, have really nothing to do with each other.

I remember a war movie starring Monica Belluci with something like this in it. She did it with a fairly young kid before they was all blown up or some stupid shit. Don't remember the name though.

You can't get any more related than being the SAME PERSON.

Of course using the word "person" to describe a rapist that fled prosecution is probably insulting to most people, but there you go.

He's a piece of garbage, and anyone willing to work with him, well, smells...

Exactly. You know what, I admire his movies. Rosemary's Baby is extraordinarily creepy and good, and Chinatown is genius. That doesn't change the fact that he's still a convicted criminal.

I'm uncomfortable with the fact that critics and hollywood-types flock to work for and honor this man. He is an amazing filmmaker, but I'll remember him as being a criminal and a child molester. That stinks.

Maybe it was Malèna (imdb.com).

"Parents don't care about violence if there's any kind of sex involved."

-Paraphrased from South Park

In my mind this doesn't come anywhere near pushing the boundry of good taste that "The Passion" did. Mel Gibson should make "The Passion of Adam and Eve" so we can just finally get over this sex/violence thing.
