Just purchased a toploading NES from ebay and was wondering what some of your favorite games from the old 8 bit generation were. Mine include Bionic Commando, Contra, Super Mario 3, Zelda 2, Castlevania 2, and Yo Noid.

Metroid! You're spot on with the Zelda/Mario choices. I also had a soft spot for Tecmo Wrestling, but that was by no means a great game in any sense. Oh, and Ninja Turles blew me away at the time, as I was using a ZX Spectrum and had never seen multiple colours on a screen. Ah, my lost youth .

Ninja Gaiden, the intro sequence to the game was very nice.
I also second the Contra selection. God bless up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B.

Bubble Bobble is at the top of my list. Pure chewing satisfaction.

The rest, in no particular order:
* Dr. Mario
* (Tengen) Tetris (far better than the Nintendo version)
* Adventures of Lolo 1-3 (block-pushing puzzles with action elements)
* High Speed, Pin-Bot (not bad ports of classic pinballs, considering the technology)
* Mega Man 2-4, before they got overly repetitive
* Trog (nice arcade port)
* Solomon's Key, Palamedes, Kickle Cubicle (underrated puzzlers)
* SOME ports of classic 80's arcade games (the Donkey Kongs, Karnov, Klax, Mario Bros., Elevator Action, Gauntlet 2, Rygar, Toobin', Xevious, Pac-Mania). Some others didn't fare so well (Spy Hunter and Galaga come to mind), some weren't that good to begin with (Kid Niki), and I don't want to THINK about how badly they screwed up Gyruss.

The Mario games weren't bad, but I never saw the appeal of the Zeldas (and, to this date, I still don't).

I second (or is it fifth) the mentions for Metroid, both Zelda games, Mario 1 and 3, and Pro Wrestling.

I would also go with Kid Icarus, Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Double Dragon I and II

Probably my favorite all-time game is Tecmo Super Bowl. Neal Anderson was the man on that game! I also loved SMB3, Contra, and even Gyromite. Did anyone else have that dumb robot that picked up the spinning discs?

Yes, I'm afraid that would be me. Actually I still have it. It makes a very attratctive hat rack.

I also had ROB for Gyromite.

I guess I am the only one who liked Super Mario 2 more than 3. Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda great early adventure games. I totally forgot about Solomen's Key. I would play that for hours. Anybody remember a Simpson's puzzle game I think it was called Krusty's Factory or something? That thing got pretty challenging too.

Besides alot of the ones previously mentioned my top two were:

Super Dodge Ball
River City Ransom

I loved these games when I was a kid. In fact, I bought the GBA just for the re-release of Super Dodge Ball. (Though in retrospect, Fire Pro isn't such a bad game either )

Not at all -- it's my favorite of the series. Of course, part of that may be because it wasn't originally a Mario game to begin with; cosmetic surgery was performed on an existing Famicom Disk System game to Mario-ify it, so to speak. I believe the original name was "Dream Factory," but I could be wrong on that.

The "real" SMB2 popped up on a SNES cart as "The Lost Levels" or something like that, and played much more like SMB1 than what we saw stateside.

Zelda is up there in my faves (the sequal was okay, but just not as fun as the original). Contra also rules; my friends and I could finish that game in 20-30 minutes. The Dragon Warrior series was pretty cool, too.

Odd thing was, once I played the original SM2, I wasn;t all that impressed. It just seemed like a harder SMB1 with not that much different.

SMB2 USA I thought was great though. I liked the multiple characters thing and the no-time-limit bit. It had a nice rleaxed "Pick up and play" kidna groove I liked.

But I always gave Mario a pass. . .I was more into using Luigi and Toad. And occasionally the Princess--anyone who flies by the power of vaginal thrust is not to be taken lightly.

I remember a Krusty's Funhouse for NES, but I don't know if that's the one you mean - I remember my other Simpsons game better, except for the name. Something involving space mutants, spraypainting purple things, and dropping bowling balls on Sideshow Bob's feet..

I loved World Games, Top Gun, SMB2, and Duck Hunt, but I absolutely RULED at that Track and Field game that came with the Power Pad. Was that the only Power Pad game, or was there another?...

some of my fav. games:
Mario 1,2,3
Double Dragon
Star Wars
Ninja Gaiden

New Zealand Story
Ufouria (that game ruled!)

StegDutchie: the Simpson game you are refering to is The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants. I had it too, but found it hard.

I'm disappointed no one's mentioned Mafat Conspiracy, Super C or Mighty Final Fight...Bad News Baseball was pretty damned great as well (c'mon, it had Mr. T).
