Wow, I don't find anything about Jimmy's talk show to be funny in the least, but this might be a bit of an overreaction on ABC's part.

I mean, I think it's hilarious that it happened, but I would've liked to have seen it, just to get me more excited about the series.

Oh man. Who cares? Let's say Detroit fans really are that offended that someone on TV jokingly said they would riot if their team wins. Fine. But to pull his show off the air nationwide over it? C'mon now.

Clearly, over the past 10 years, we in L.A. have taken a commanding lead in postgame riots. If the Lakers win, I plan to overturn my own car.”
So not only did he apologize, he reaffirmed the fact that it was only a damn joke, and further proved this by telling the same joke again but about himself & his own city. What else do you need?

SO!??! He's in LOS ANGELES. His home team is playing against Detroit's team in the NBA finals. Why is him ripping the opponents of his home team even an issue here? Why is it even mentioned? I listen to ESPN radio everyday here at work, and those guys are ripping teams from other cities (and even our own cities) all day long. WHO CARES??

Am I missing something here?

I agree. I can take any sort of ribbing without it being censored. However, I don't think it was what he said during game 2, but rather what he said on his show last night. Of course, I don't know what that is, but supposedly he devoted an entire 5-6 minute segment on ripping Detroit.

I, personally, would've liked to have seen it and I'm a little miffed that ABC kept everyone from making that choice. That said, I think it's hilarious because ABC obviously doesn't think much of the show's ratings or it probably would've aired.

Incredible. The NBA has been in a ratings slump since Jordan retired, now ABC gets some controversy going which cross promotes both the game and the show that's on after the game...and they get mad?! Bogus. Could it really have been that hard to spin this into a positive? Was it not a positive already?

Most cities have civil unrest when their team wins a major championship, especially when it's been after a decade.

Most fans expect to see some sort of incident, no matter how small, when their team wins, or loses.

We has some riots here in MD when the school was bounced out of March Madness. There were riots in WV when they beat the Hokie Birds one fall. I think Mike Vick was already with the Falcons when that happened.

Kimmels joke is funny because it's true. Detroit needs to get their panties out of a bunch. Prove Kimmel wrong. Win the title and throw a tea party and show him y'all don't riot.

Actually, that was hilarious because they beat the Hokies in Blacksburg and then students AT Morgantown stormed their OWN field and tore down their OWN goalposts. My step-grandparents live in WV and we laughed for ages at that one.

They stormed an empty field? Classic.

That's like that joke with the punchline "...and four plays later Poland scored"

I could be remembering things wrong, but I've been through 4 national championship celebrations and a World Series and don't recall anything resembling a riot. The 2001 Canes and the Marlins last year I can't vouch for.

There WAS one during the week of a Super Bowl and it postponed a Heat game, but that was unrelated to winning anything.

Grace Gilchrist, WXYZ's general manager and vice president, just happened to be in Los Angeles on Wednesday for an affiliates meeting. Andrea Parquet-Taylor, Channel 7's news director, said Gilchrist personally expressed her outrage at Kimmel's comments to ABC's brass.

Parquet-Taylor hinted that Kimmel was in for some punitive action. Gilchrist later learned about Kimmel's new remarks against Detroit, prompting her to again protest to ABC late Wednesday evening.

“We are pretty livid about the entire situation,” Parquet-Taylor said. “Grace gave them an earful. We think that there is a lot of discussion about how Jimmy Kimmel has jeopardized his right to have clearance in this community. Totally out of line. We have got probably one of the strongest audience bases in the country for him.

“An apology is not going to cut it at all. We're not going to accept that from him. He owes this community much more.”

-----------------------------------------------

Oh, shut UP, Grace. Yeesh.......

-----------------------------------------------

WDFN 1130 mid-morning host Sean Baligian fielded an hour of calls Wednesday, fueled by people outraged at Kimmel.

“It was unreal. Man, did that statement ever touch a nerve,” Baligian said. “People are mad. They're offended. I have never received such a quick reaction.”

Callers to Baligian's show were mad that Kimmel slammed Detroit without cause.

“Caller after caller, and people who were e-mailing me, were mad because what Kimmel said is simply untrue,” Baligian said. “It's not true. Detroit does not burn when teams win. It's a lie, and people are mad that somebody would say something so terrible about Detroit on national TV.

“Jimmy Kimmel is a funny cat, he doesn't need to go somewhere as lame as making a lie up about Detroit. And he wasn't even funny on top of it.”

-----------------------------------------------

Wasn't funny? Bullshit. Make fun of yourselves. I do it to myself all the time. Big fucking deal Go have a shot of Jag and relax.

-----------------------------------------------

The REAL tragedy of this story:

"WXYZ replaced Kimmel with an episode of "The Wayne Brady Show".

-----------------------------------------------

Hell, I'd riot over THAT~! I hope Grace's car get's overturned in teh parking lot of WXYZ for that decision alone.

BS. It's not true, nor is it even close. Hello? We've won 3 Stanley Cups since 1997...no riots.

Seriously - someone from L.A. saying DETROIT would riot? Detroit hasn't had a riot in about 50 years, thanks. Rodney King.

And it's not that funny, either. Oh, hahaha, the winning team will riot! OH, HAHAHAHHA!!!! WAIT, NO, I'M NOT DONE HOLDING MY SIDES YET. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! If you think that's funny, you're too easily amused.

It's not "Detroit that needs to get their panties out of a bunch." You know damn well with society as uptight as it is right now, no matter WHAT city he said it about, they would have complained.

I agree it's overreacting to dump the show, but them's the breaks. You have to be careful what you say now.

I happen to think the irony is quite funny. I got a chuckle out of Kimmel for that reason. Someone in LA commenting about another town going rioting.

I completely forgot that the WV kids tore up their own empty field. *sigh*

I'm still trying to figure out what made them so pissed. The comment itself doesn't look that bad to me. It's almost like they're taking it as a racial comment (which would piss me off greatly if that was my hometown).

Ok, my math was wrong. Of course I know about the 67 riots. It should have been "about 40 years." Regardless, it's still a ridiculous statement for someone too make.

You say "you guys" like anyone who was participating in it at that point is still at large, wreaking havoc. Sorry, I doubt many of the people who were around 20 at the time who are now in their 60's are going to be running out to tear apart the town if the local basketball team wins.

Didn't Tiger fans do some damage when they won the World Series in 1984? I was too young to remember it, but I heard Kornheiser and Wilbon talking about it on PTI today. I also could have sworn there were some shenanigans when the Red Wings won the Cup a while back, also the Pistons in the late eighties...but I was on the wrong continent and also still too young to remember clearly those events.

There's almost always a few isolated incidents, no matter WHAT city it is. If a sports team wins the title in North America in a major city, there are going to be a few arrests. Nothing happened even remotely close to a riot though.

Yes it would be, if he was making a factual statement about the city. But he wasn't. It was a joke, funny or not and the overreaction by the city is just plain old retarded.

It was ridiculous REGARDLESS of whether he was making a factual statement or not. The joke made no sense. I guess it was a "retarded reaction" for a retarded joke.

It's not an "overreaction by the city." Some people look for an excuse to be pissed off at EVERYTHING, it doesn't matter what city you're in. Most people here couldn't care less. The TV news interviews 50 people about the incident, 4 or 5 of them are offended. Then the news shows the 4 or 5 who were offended.

How much you want to bet that a Pistons player goes on the Kimmel show if they win the series?

Now THAT would be funny. It'd be about as awkward for Kimmel as the night he had Karl Malone on his show after his years of Karl Malone skits.

First Amendment's alive and well, isn't it? Since when does Freedom of Speech apply only if it doesn't hurt someone else's feelings? How uptight are television networks becoming when a stupid joke results in getting pulled off the air and massive future repercussions? Making a joke about Detroit is no different than the usual stuff directed towards Texas or Florida. This whole thing might give Detroit a new image: the whiny town that can't take a joke. Eminem and Kid Rock would be ashamed.

And to prove my point, I don't see anyone from L.A. in an uproar over that "L.A. leads Detroit in post-game riots" joke he made later on. I don't see anyone making complaints to ABC. Learn to take a joke.

Yeah, because Detroit isn't known for violent crime, and Detroit, as you know, is actually known for having nothing but model citizens.

Detroit's indignance in this matter would be far more interesting to me if it weren't quite so covered in crap.
