Both EBGames.com and Gamestop.com have ESPN NFL 2005 listed as $19.95 for both PS2 and Xbox. I'm not sure if this is a mistake on Sega's part or not, but I preordered it anyway, just in case. If Sega is really going to sell the game for $20, they're obviously doing it to try and cut into Madden's sales. Heck, I bought last years for $50, and I would have bought this years game for $50 as well, as I think Madden is terrible compared to ESPN. Those of you Madden lovers, if this price is right, I suggest to try the game. I bought the 2003 game two years ago at a discounted price and have never played a game of Madden since.

Interesting. I'd buy it for $20, but I don't want to take the chance that I will order it for $20 and get billed $50 later - and have to fight them about it.

I don't think that hassle is worth $30. Still, maximum tackle looks interesting. I was a big fan of the NFL2k series on the DC - it's what sold me on the console. It's good to see that Sega is sticking with it, despite the huge lead that Madden has in the sales numbers.

I'll have to look, but didn't Madden sell over 15 million copies for the PS2 the first week last year?

IGN.com has a list of new and fun features in the ESPN Football franchise, and I must say, it looks very good. I'm impressed with the game prep portion of franchise mode, and am considering picking it up. Madden's been king around my apartment for a while now, but ESPN is looking very tempting this year.

If it's only 20 bucks, then I'll buy both!

EDIT: It's official. Both gamestop.com and ebgames.com have it, and gamestop says that you save 30 bucks off the regular price. I think it only applies for a limited time, however, so scoop it up while you can.

What I find most interesting about this is that Take-Two is co-publishing the games (ir.take2games.com).

I'd love to give it a try, but I've become super-loyal to EA Sports.

Everything they make is just so damn good...

This is what Gamespot has to say about this right now

http://www.gamespot.com/ xbox/sports/espnnflfootball2005/ news_6100283.html

There is a new name for the game (using the old 2K thing instead of 2005), but they haven't confirmed the new price. But they did promise "big announcements" regarding the game real soon.

This would be a bold move to just get the game into households, but makes sense if they want to try to break the Madden brand loyality and attempt to establish brand loyality of their own (I think they would be banking on some people switching just based on price alone, but they are probably really banking on Madden fans buying both games, and ultimately simply liking ESPN better). If the game ends up being $20, I'm definitely sold!

It would also make sense if they established brand loyalty by SHOWING THE DAMN GAME ON ESPN. As someone who's found the 2K/ESPN series FAR more satisfying than the arcade-fest that is Madden, it would drive me crazy seeing them use footage from EA games during College Gameday, NFL Countdown, and the NFL Draft, among other things. I get that EA buys the ad time on the shows, but with a competing (and better) product out there with the ESPN name on it, why WOULDN'T you use it whenever you can?

I think that 15 million may be the total sales of the Madden franchise on Ps2. But no single game on the current systems has even crossed six million yet. I think the best selling Madden on ps2 was 2003 and it got near 5 million. 15 million in a week would be insane. 15,000,000 * 49.99= about $750 million dollars in seven days. Just for comparison that's more than the domestic gross of any movie, ever.

I usually pick up these used for $10 at some point, so if they can confirm the $20 I'll buy it new, and I'll even pre-order it.

I wonder what % of the run they've been selling at $50 and how many they are selling for $10 later on... this may be a better overall deal for them if 80% of their sales were for $10 before.

//edit: I found the stat I was 'remembering'

http://www.nintelligent.net/news1420.php+PS2+Gamecube+Xbox+"total+sales"& hl=en&ie=UTF-8

1.5 million in sales, not 15 million. Oops.

I bought NFL 2k3 on sale for $20.00 that year, and thought that the AI was ridiculously out of whack. I traded it in and got Madden on sale via a K-B Toys misprint at $30.00, and haven't looked at a Sega football game since. I loved the Dreamcast games though, I wish I still had mine.

Hopefully this is successful enough to change the pricing strategy for all of the sports titles. As good as the games are, fifty or sixty dollars a year for what usually amounts to minor graphical tweaking, roster changes, and the occasional gameplay adjustment seems a little nuts. I'd rather they had the structure of, say, an Everquest... save the full-priced versions for major overhauls and TRUE sequels.

Since EA in particular is directly encouraging people to buy all of their titles every year, a lower price would make that a lot more realistic.

This is so awesome! My brother has last year's game, and while I didn't get to play it a whole lot, based on the time I did play I thought it was at or near Madden-level (though it does play differently). Who knows, maybe EA will feel pressured to cut their price some too!

The only thing I think that hurts this is that Madden comes out two weeks earlier. I'll be asking for, and hopefully recieving the Special Edition for my birthday, so I probably won't have any need to get this, even if I were to pre-order.

A storyline in Madden vs weekly preperation mode in 2k5. That's a really tough call. I really like the create-a-fan option in Madden, but like a lot of you I couldn't resist the $20 price tag, and have sold out this year.

If I'm not mistaken, the final roster stuff gets done in the middle of June. It's around the same time every year, so if somebody has last year's Madden, it's right at the title screen. I traded mine in a few months back.
