Man, is that dude lucky. The HBO crew must've shot on what we call "time-of-day" time code...where you set the time code in your camera to the exact time, and let it run, whether or not you're recording. It sometimes makes it harder for your VTRs to grab onto the frame you want when editing, but it makes it easy as hell for whoever's writing the thing...all you gotta do is look at your watch to see where an event in front of you will appear on the tape. (Many sports reporters have me do that all the time when I'm shooting Packers sideline video, and they're up in the press box.)
Most of the time, many TV crews don't shoot on time-of-day time code, but just zero it out before rolling. If the HBO crew would've done that, the guy's lawyer couldn't have proven so conclusively that his client was in Dodger Stadium at the time he claimed.
