Seriously, did you SEE the reaction he got a few weeks ago on Raw? It really demonstrates how a lot of the fanbase is just not as excited as they once were.

Were you watching the same show I was? The fans seemed to be excited to see The Rock. The fact is that when The Rock hits the ring, something BIG goes down or someone important gets the rub. I'd rather see that than no Rock at all.

I'm not arguing your overall point that the fans love the Rock, but Eugene and the Coach are not what I would call "someone important."

I dunno, I'd class Eugene as important in one way or another. The gimmick they've given Dinsmore was extremely risky in that careless handling could have landed them some REALLY bad press, so having him seen to be accepted and cheered on by the company's biggest mainstream crossover star was a very shrewd move.

"hes in a main event"
When has The Rock been in a ME last time? I can't remember.

Though I don't like Rock very much he doesn't bother me at all. It's always a great feeling when he appears into shows and why should it annoy? It always brings something important or interesting like Freeway420 already said.

Speaking as someone who was actually at RAW in San Diego, the arena exploded when Rocky came out. I haven't heard a pop like that in years, and I could hardly hear the man's promo. I had to watch the show again when I got home.

Vince receives an executive producer credit on Rock's movies, which, in case you didn't realize, means big money. Plus, it always helps to have a movie star come out for your big shows, it makes it seem more important.

It is a little bit painful, to watch the rock show up, outshine everyone else when it comes to star quality, charisma, and holding my interest in everything he does more than anyone else on the show, and to have to deal with the fact that he's gone and not going to be coming back for half a year. But what can you do? You can't get rid of the guy

The one thing you need to understand is that The Rock is going to keep doing movies for as long as there's the demand for him (and maybe even after that; see also Hogan, Hulk). He doesn't NEED wrestling anymore, as I would bet the guy already has enough money to retire. But instead of leaving the company to do other things entirely, he's kept on retainer and comes back every once in a while to pop the crowd. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Let's put it this way: would you rather he never show up on Raw again?

My big issue is that RAW isn't the show that *needs* the Rock; the show that was annointed as "The Rock's Show," or "The People's Show," SMACKDOWN, does. Despite the "live" factor that comes from popping up on RAW, there really isn't a reason to not Spread the Love to SD. In fact, since Rock was granted the "Immunity" which enables him to show up on any show, he *should* be on Smackdown every so often to pop THAT crowd.

You know, if people would "put on their thinking caps" they'd realize a few things about Rock of Nazareth. First, he's under contract to WWE and has been this whole time. Whether he "needs" them or not he's legally obligated to do what they ask him to. His ownership of the Rock name is probably conditional and is a recent development anyway.

Also, Rundown's box office success was underwhelming to say the least. Walking Tall didn't recover its budget in initial release either. His sole blockbuster was the Scorpion King which was connected to an established franchise. So the idea that he should or would walk away from a built-in fanbase of wrestling fans when his standing with non-wrestling fans is tenuous at best is absurd.

Also, he's not the first set for life wrestler who came back to the spotlight. There's a huge difference between making a movie and stepping out in front of a live audience. There's saying the same thing repeatedly in front of 50 people on a closed set, and there's going in front of thousands of people (less than before, granted, but still a lot of people) and knowing any mistake will be seen. It's a different kind of a charge and it's very addictive, any top guy in the business has trouble walking away from it. Even if they have something "better", which every wrestling fan on the planet is convinced the movie biz is.

None of this is to say that Rocky isn't a great part of the show when he's there. I'm a fan of his and am always glad when he's around. But I don't have this unrealistic urge to fellate him every time he shows up on WWE TV.

The real test of his dedication and charity as it relates to wrestling will be when his contract renewal comes up sometime this year I believe.

According to the IMDb Walking Tall had a budget of $46,000,000 and has so far made $45,138,529 at the US box office alone, so I think it's safe to say it will make it's budget. The Rundown's numbers aren't as good. It won't make it budget out the box office, but with dvd sales I'd imagine it will do fine.

I am aware of the figures. All I said is these films have been underwhelming. Looking at those numbers, I do not see how anyone could Rock in a box-office heavy hitter category. Point is Rock does not exactly pack them into the theatres, so he has a vested interest in maintaining his link to 3 million people a couple times a week who know and love him.

I have no problem blaming "The Rundowns" lack of initial success on a piss poor ad campaign. I never once saw a commercial during the theatrical release that made Rundown look like anything but typical crappy buddy movie garbage.

I'll admit that Walking tall looked in trailers to kick all sorts of ass. It unfortunatly lined up againt serious blockbuster material in the punisher and a half dozen other revenge themed flicks in a short period.

As far as The Rock and wrestling go? He comes, has some fun, entertains the crowd and is able to disappear before going too stale.

A couple other things about that:

1) The economy still hasn't recovered yet. A lot of numbers are down right now because people are tightening the wallet.

2) Rock's doing pretty damn well considering he still has a stigma from his wrestling background. I know quite a few people who stated that they don't really want to see his movies simply from that. "Be Cool" should hopefully help him break that, as it'll put him in front of a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't consider seeing his work.

The thing I love about the Rock, and the thing that truly separates him from Hogan in both wrestling and movies? He makes whoever he's working with look golden. He'll sell for anyone (remember, Eugene had to back him up against Cade and COACH), and he's fantastic at what one of my improv teachers referred to as "Yes, And." Someone does something, and rather than ignore it, shut it down, or counter it, he kinda says "Yes, and..." and goes with it. He fleshes it out, and takes it to the next step. And in doing so, he makes whoever he's working with look great, whether it's Eugene's love for HHH or Jericho's quest to win the big one. Hogan was good at many things, but making someone else look like a threat was never one of them.

That's kind of a catch 22, then. Wrestling is really the reason for Rock's movie success, and yet may be an impediment to it at the same time.

Not quite sure about the reason for the Hogan comparison. Hogan doesn't have a whole lot to do with this argument.

The economy being responsible is an excuse we crap on for wrestling, why is it more applicable to movies? Especially when movies are so much cheaper to follow than wrestling is?
