Looks like former Lakers, Pacers and Grizzlies star (and former Nets coach) Byron Scott has agreed in principle to sign with the New Orleans Hornets as their new head coach.

Read it about it here.

I had a feeling that Byron wouldn't stay unemployed for very long. I hope he does well in his new position. Even though his Nets beat my Pacers a couple years back in the playoffs, I've always legitimately liked Byron. Hell, it was his game-winning three-point shot that started our first big playoff run way back in 1994. [Christopher Lloyd] My God, has it been that long? [/Christopher Lloyd]

But here's the thing. Hornets' management unrealistically expected Tim Floyd to lead them deep in the playoffs this season. When the Hornets' season ended with a disappointing Game 7 loss to the Heat in the first round, Floyd was canned almost immediately.

The pressure's on for Byron Scott. Who's to say Shinn won't can Scott immediately if he can't get past that point? Hell, for that matter, who's to say that George “Asshole” Shinn wouldn't have canned Tim Floyd even if the Hornets' season had ended with a Game 7 loss to the Lakers in the NBA Finals? Who the hell knows what he's thinking?

So the pressure is on, but if the Hornets hope to have more success next year, they need to... you know... get a better team.

Maybe they just realized they had hired TIM FLOYD as their coach. Technically, he can be a head coach, but not all that well. Byron Scott's a huge step up. Too bad they're switching conferences... they had the size to compete in the West last season. I'm hoping Byron gets it done... I know the Hornets are much better than a .500 team.

Oh, yeah, good point. I hadn't even thought about that.

Byron has to find some way not only to compete, but to compete well in the Western Conference.

I was hoping Byron would end up coaching the Lakers in the event that Phil is gone next year, but he's a good guy and I hope he does well in N.O. (but not too well!).

... I was pretty much thinking along those same lines. I would definitely like to see a Laker alum on the bench ... perhaps Michael Cooper could be a candidate at this point. I know it's farfetched, but I could see Magic going down to Florida and talking to Pat Riley -- I'd love to see Riles come back home.

Well, being that I'm not a Lakers fan, I think their hiring Pat Riley would be a great idea.

I mean, it'd suck for the Lakers franchise, but it'd be pretty cool for everyone else.

I think it was pretty damning that after failing to lead the Heat to the playoffs for two years (and hitting rock bottom with a 25-57 season in 2002-03), Pat Riley said to Stan Van Gundy, “You're in!”, and Van Gundy overcame a poor start to lead the Heat back to the playoffs... and into the second round, no less.

I dunno... I think Riley's style simply doesn't motivate today's players like it did in the '80s and even the early to mid-'90s with the Knicks and the Heat.

Regarding L.A.'s next head coach, though... Cooper's most assuredly a candidate, after leading the Sparks to back-to-back WNBA Championships. But the WNBA season takes up the entire summer... can the Lakers hold out that long before announcing him as the new head coach? Is it really a good idea to give them that level of uncertainty?

For that matter... win or lose this year, is it the Lakers' Last Dance?
